About Jon

Music, and rhythm in particular, has been a lifelong passion for me. With 12 years of percussion experience, 3 years of music theory study, and a year of experience teaching private lessons, I know the approaches that work, and the approaches that don't. Most importantly, I understand the importance of keeping the joy of music alive.

When I first began teaching I struggled with approach. How do I hold a student's interest/attention? How do I get a student to practice? How do I inspire a student? How much material should I really assign a student per week? It has taken a year, but I now think I understand how to better tailor my lesson's to the individual I'm teaching.

I specialize in teaching the drums, particularly the drum set, though I also teach some Indian and Latin percussion. I can teach/play rock, jazz, latin, funk, and hip hop drumming. I also am happy to teach/tutor music theory having just finished my music theory studies for my music degree. Since I am currently in the pursuit of a music degree, I understand all too well that music can be a serious undertaking, and that playing the drums can seem overwhelming when you begin. I do my best to keep things fun by combining lessons on new techniques or grooves with the opportunity to experience playing music the student enjoys. I find that a student will get the most out of a lesson if they take what they learn, and try to use it in a musical context. Additionally, when a groove or technique becomes something that isn't simply theoretical, it is generally more appealing and may hold a student's interest better.

I am always looking for feedback, and I am always flexible about lesson scheduling and re-scheduling. I can hold lessons/tutoring sessions at my home, or at a student's preferred location. I do have a 24-hr cancellation policy, but I am always happy to schedule makeup lessons.

I look forward to hearing from you and doing my best to helping you reach your goals in music!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I have studied percussion/drums for 12 years. I have been teaching for over a year, including a brief stint as substitute drum teacher at Melody Acres Music in Wellington, FL and more recently as primary drum teacher at the Performing Arts Academy in Jupiter, FL (not to mention being a freelance drum teacher as well). I am a former Florida Atlantic University student, and I will be starting at Berklee College of Music in Boston during Fall 2016, where my primary instrument and major will be the drum set.

Music Theory

I am a music major with my associates degree, and have recently finished all my college level theory classes. I have been a music teacher for 1.5 years now.
