In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught students who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD for 8 years. They are in every class I have ever taught and I accommodate the learning style through a variety of ways. The best way is to build rapport with a student first in order to discover which setting works best for them. From there I am able to create a lesson which will assist with their learning. For example, if a students feels more comfortable reading one paragraph at a time, I can have them get up and draw a picture on the board which best symbolizes what they learned from each paragraph. Constantly switching up lessons seems to work best.
I have assisted juniors and seniors with preparing for both the ACT and SAT. I have worked with students on researching colleges based on GPA requirements and SAT/ACT scores. I have helped tutor kids in order to raise scores and receive admittance to the school they wanted. I have contacts with college universities and admission officers. I have attended college fairs in order to counsel students on admittance requirements and scholarship options. Additionally, I have toured almost all college campuses in Florida in order to be abreast of college trends and admission requirements. I am able to assist students with college essays and researching the best college for for their personality.
I have tutored Elementary level reading through SES companies in the past. I have worked with children during the summer to improve their phonetics and reading levels. I have worked with kids on spelling and sounding things out in order to improve reading. Systematically working through decoding and blending has always given strong results.
I am qualified to teach study skills because it has always been a part of my curriculum. When teaching a new concept it is important for teachers to model HOW a student should study. This is done through note-taking like Cornell Notes, chunking texts, and questioning what has been read and making predictions about what is next.
Study Skills must have consistency. For example, a student should have a plan every day, a place to write down their plan and a checklist of when the execute their plan. Reflecting upon what they studied is key to acquiring a new skill. I have also been certified in AVID through Orange County public school which teaches students study skills and organization.
