About Nikki

Hello! My name is Nikki and I am an experienced tutor and consultant. I grew up in South Africa, where I trained and certified as an Educational Psychologist (M.ED). I have experience with working with children with ADD/ADHD, Autism and Aspergers, Dyslexia, special needs and other learning difficulties, as this is my specialization. I also have over 10 years of tutoring and coaching experience, covering many subjects, grades, ages and abilities.

I believe that every child can learn and be the best that they can be, provided with a calm, supportive and non-threatening learning environment. This is something that I maintain in my teaching and tutoring approach. I believe it is important to not only transfer the knowledge they need to be successful in the classroom, but also to build their confidence and self-esteem in learning. I aim to provide lessons through a warm and empathetic student-tutor relationship. My style of tutoring is communicative and kind, yet firm when it is needed. I believe that education is the stepping stones to success and I care about each of my students and work hard to help them grow and succeed in their schooling and academic pursuits. I teach a variety of subjects and ages, including homeschool students. I am currently seeking my certification in the Wilson Reading System, a research-based intervention program for students with Dyslexia or reading struggles.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have formal experience in tutoring children with ADD/ADHD. I also qualified as an educational psychologist in South Africa and have experience in teaching and assessing children with ADD/ADHD, including the implementation of interventions to assist with learning.

Aspergers

I have experience working with children with various learning difficulties, including Autism and Aspergers in my capacity as an Educational Psychologist, through psychoeducational assessments, intervention implementations, parent & staff advisement, counseling etc.

Autism

I have trained and qualified as an educational psychologist and have experience with working with children with Autism. This experience includes teaching, running small groups for social skills, assessments, and assisting in implementing intervention programs to improve overall social, behavioral and academic functioning.

Dyslexia

As a part of my training in educational psychology, I have worked with many children with dyslexia. I worked in a school that specialized in learning difficulties, and conducted assessments and testing for dyslexia. I also worked with parents and teachers to find strategies to best assist children with dyslexia in school and at home. I have also tutored children with this learning difficulty.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an educational psychologist, I have worked with many elementary age students, both privately and in schools. My experience with this age group includes teaching, life lessons, conducting group work, therapy and educational assessments and tests. Furthermore, I have primarily provided tutoring and instruction to children of elementary age for a period of more than 5 years. The elementary years is one of my favorite age groups to work with.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I have taught many students elementary mathematics over the years. My students also enjoy the math games we play to solidify concepts and principles as well as have fun with maths!

Handwriting

I have had extensive experience in working with students to improve their handwriting. Many of my past students have battled with writing, both in terms of formation of letters as well writing down their thoughts. My background in educational psychology and learning difficulties helps inform my lessons with students.

Homeschool

I am an experienced teacher/tutor for homeschool students. I teach individual subjects as well as across the curriculum for Third through Seventh Grade. I have over three years of experience in working with homeschool families and provide teaching, tutoring, consultations and evaluations.

Phonics

As an Educational Psychologist, I have a strong background in reading instruction and intervention. I am also currently seeking certification in the Wilson Reading Program which aims to assist struggling readers.

Psychology

My experience in psychology is extensive, as I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in this area. I trained as an educational psychologist in South Africa, and have extensive knowledge regarding psychology, particularly educational psychology. I have also tutored many students in psychology (college and AP level) as well as graded assignments and essays at the undergraduate level.

SAT Reading

I personally scored in the top 10 percentile for the SAT Reading. I help my students to use critical reading, thinking and analysis to tackle the SAT. I help with improving understanding of the SAT and how to attempt the questions, as well as focusing on how to improve reading and understanding.

Sociology

In South Africa, I did my second major in Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand, and graduated with my Bachelor of arts with a major in both psychology and sociology.

Special Needs

I am a qualified Educational Psychologist in South Africa, and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Study Skills

I have trained and qualified as an Educational Psychologist in South Africa, and am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. In my role as a educational psychologist, I am skilled at assessing learning difficulties and barriers to learning and designing and implementing interventions to assist and improve a child's learning. This includes developing study skills. I have also presented workshops to parents at Cedarwood Remedial School, in Jhb, in South Africa, to promote academic learning and study skills in children with various difficulties.
