Hello! My name is Nikki and I am an experienced tutor and consultant. I grew up in South Africa, where I trained and certified as an Educational Psychologist (M.ED). I have experience with working with children with ADD/ADHD, Autism and Aspergers, Dyslexia, special needs and other learning difficulties, as this is my specialization. I also have over 10 years of tutoring and coaching experience, covering many subjects, grades, ages and abilities.
I believe that every child can learn and be the best that they can be, provided with a calm, supportive and non-threatening learning environment. This is something that I maintain in my teaching and tutoring approach. I believe it is important to not only transfer the knowledge they need to be successful in the classroom, but also to build their confidence and self-esteem in learning. I aim to provide lessons through a warm and empathetic student-tutor relationship. My style of tutoring is communicative and kind, yet firm when it is needed. I believe that education is the stepping stones to success and I care about each of my students and work hard to help them grow and succeed in their schooling and academic pursuits. I teach a variety of subjects and ages, including homeschool students. I am currently seeking my certification in the Wilson Reading System, a research-based intervention program for students with Dyslexia or reading struggles. Hello! It's hard not to gush about every aspect of Nikki B.'s performance as a tutor for our son. He's an ADHD kid, which obviously presents some significant challenges at school and in tutoring sessions. But one of Nikki's specialties is working with ADHD students, and you can see why: She brings educational training, teaching talent and just the right warm personality to the lessons. With our guy, she's kind & patient, but when he loses focus or is just horsing around, she's also very firm and in control, so that they're able to advance with the session, keeping him on track (or putting him back there!). She's also very organized, making very good use of the allotted time, and incorporates visual aids, worksheets, and other materials to underscore the main points of the lesson, while keeping it dynamic and fun. "Fun" may be a surprising word to use in a review of a tutor, but Nikki employs end-of-lesson games with our guy, both as an incentive (if you do well & get your work done during the lesson, we'll play a game at the end, etc.), but also as a way to sharpen the skills that were the focus of the lesson. Anyway, I guess it's obvious that my wife & I are big fans of Nikki B. She's great.
My daughter loves Nikki and really enjoys going to see her. Nikki is very patient and is great at making my daughter feel good about the lessons and her progress.
Nikki is patient and easy to understand as my son states. She gives room for the the student to think and does not pressure or make him feel inferior. My son looks forward to his sessions with Nikki, I would recommend Nikki to any one!
Nikki is a great tutor. My son has ADHD and struggles with reading and reading comprehension. His reading has improved dramatically and Nikki has worked with him on establishing techniques for better comprehension.
She is very flexible, and is able to adapt her 'lesson plans' to deal with immediate concerns. My son was very anxious about an upcoming test, and when I mentioned that to her, she also worked with him on dealing with his anxiety and helped with test prep.
I highly recommend Nikki, she is patient and engaging. It's obvious that she enjoys children and has a true desire to help your child succeed.
Nikki is amazing. My son adores her and wants to learn. He gets so excited when she comes and loves his whole lesson. Nikki is patient, calm and gives constant praise. My son processes very slowly, he is dyslexic. I do not think we could of found a better fit for a tutor. I hope that anyone needing help in math will give her a try. Nikki has a very special way about how she handles children and works with them so effortlessly.
I feel as though we have struck gold.
Nikki has been very effective and professional. She has worked within our tight schedule to help with end-of-year push to get grade up and prepare for Psychology AP exam. I would highly recommend her and will not hesitate to call again, if needed, during his senior year.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
