About Karen

I have been working as an Adjunct Instructor at several Community colleges (Professional Golfer's Career College, Tallahassee Community College, Gulf Coast State College, and Palm Beach State College) in Florida and South Carolina for the past five years.

I have taught the following courses on the college level:

ENC0017 (Developmental Reading & Writing)
REA007 (Developmental Reading)
EAP Reading & Writing (ESL)
ENC1101 (Composition 1)
ENC1102 (Composition 2)
LIT2090 (Contemporary Literature)

I worked for many years as a high school English and ESL Teacher both in New York City and the Long Island areas.

I have extensive experience working one on one with students specifically on essays and all types of writing assignments.

My Master's degree is in TESOL = Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages.

I also completed my +18 graduate credits in order to be credentialed to teach Literature on the college level.

I have worked with children as young as five years old and just recently moved to the US, to adults who were published authors in their native countries.

I am a Mother of a fourteen year old son. I am active within my church, and I have been a musician since I was 14 years old. I love being outside at the beach, trails, or cycling. I enjoy walking my dog Chloe.

I am willing to travel to your home to tutor, as long as there is a quiet place to work. I will also meet at a library or other public place.

Please feel free to ask any questions about my background.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have an undergraduate degree in English / Education grades 7 - 12.
I also have a Masters Degree in ESL. I have many years experience teaching both English and ESL.

ESL/ESOL

Teaching ESL has always been my passion.
From the very beginning I started working with 5 year old children from various countries who had just moved to the United States. These children had very little, if no exposure to speaking or hearing English. We started with color photos of items, and showed the kids the written word at the same time. Within a week the kids associated the word with the photo and were able to say the words correctly!
At SUNY Stonybrook I was a volunteer tutor at the University Writing center and had the opportunity to tutor a Korean man who was a published professor in his country. He was a professional man who needed help proof-reading his English work, and he was so appreciative and thankful for my help.
I asked for permission to do a "mini thesis" during my undergraduate studies at SUNY Stonybrook on how to teach writing to ESL students. Along with doing the paper, I acted as a "volunteer" teaching assistant for the course that trained the writing center tutors.
I look forward to working with ESL students at any level, and welcome any questions about my prior experience in this area.
