About Michael

Greetings! My name is Mike, and while I am qualified to tutor in many subjects, I mainly enjoy helping people understand math. I recently received my bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in chemistry from UNF. Over the past couple years I spent a few terms at a local college tutoring in College Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Differential Equations, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. While I still remember most of the conceptual parts from my science courses, I don’t remember all the specificities which are crucial to solving many problems; hence, I will probably not be tutoring in the sciences unless under special circumstances( with the exception of lower level Chemistry courses).

Everyone learns differently, and I don’t just mean the common visual, hands-on, and verbal learners, but at a deeper level. While trying to understand difficult concepts, the point is not just finding some universal “right perspective” but finding the right perspective for the learner. The first thing I attempt to do in a tutoring session with a new student is learn how the student understands the material and what it means to him/her. Then I create new problems and tweak things for increased difficulty and any tricks an instructor may place on a test. After each session I will assign homework and briefly review it at the beginning of the next session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I recently graduated from UNF with a Bachelor of Mathematics and a minor in chemistry. I took many courses emphasizing calculus, which relies heavily on algebra, so tutoring in this will not be a problem.

Algebra 2

I recently graduated from UNF with a Bachelor of Mathematics and a minor in chemistry. I took many courses emphasizing calculus, which relies heavily on algebra, so tutoring in this will not be a problem.

Calculus

I graduated from UNF with a bachelors in mathematics. I've taken Calculus 1-3, Advanced Calculus 1 and 2, Complex Analysis, Vector Analysis, Ordinary Differential Equations and Partial Differential Equations(applied calculus courses), and a couple other courses emphasizing single and multi variable calculus in the real plane (Probability and Statistics and Statistical Theory).

Differential Equations

As for my educational background, I received an A in Ordinary Differential Equations and a B in Partial Differential Equations (which was the second highest grade in a class with one B and one A). While I’ve never tutored in Differential Equations for money, I did spend a considerable amount of time helping other students in my classes. At this point in time I feel comfortable with tutoring in Differential Equations.
