About Douglas

Bio

I have always loved math and loved helping others excel in it. During middle and high school I helped my younger sisters and friends with math. Then, as an FSCJ student, I was hired as a math tutor for the school, where I developed more skills for explaining it to others. Since working at FSCJ, I have started to do more private lessons online, where I have helped high school students as well. Now, I am majoring in math at UNF, with plans to become a math professor some day.

When I was a math tutor at FSCJ, I went by the model: I do, we do, you do. What this means is that when we first go over a problem, I will show the student how it is done. I will walk them through what to do in different scenarios and why we do certain things. Next, we will work on a problem together. I will guide the student through the appropriate steps, but I will not tell them the answer. Lastly I have the student do a problem on their own with my supervision and if they get stuck, I will guide them along. I get a great deal of satisfaction watching the logic click in a students head when they finally figure it out.

When I was an FSCJ tutor, I helped students with basic math, such as adding fractions, up to subjects as complicated as differential equations. Most of my tutoring there centered around college algebra, trig, and calculus, so I am very well versed in those specifically. At UNF, I've taken upper level courses such as, linear algebra, foundations of math, vector analysis, and abstract algebra.

I have always loved math and helping others with math. Feel free to contact me any time! The only schedule I'd need to work around is my college class schedule.

helpful and dedicated math tutor

Douglas was very helpful. He made simple sense out of complex pre-calc and trigonometry problems. The way Douglas explained the concepts made it much easier to move through the material. When he couldn't easily solve a problem he even offered to figure it out on his own time. Fortunately, my son felt he had acquired enough knowledge to continue working on it. Douglas still figured it out and submitted his thoughts later. He definitely overdelivered.

Summer, 1 lesson with Douglas

Highly recommended

Douglas helped me to work with implicit differentiation simply and intuitively. I learned several skills to solve different problems, and I look forward to working with him in the future. Highly recommended.
