About Theresa

As an elementary school teacher I have 20 plus years experience helping students successfully learn and apply important concepts while feeling empowered by their newly acquired knowledge. I prefer to use a hands-on approach to help students understand abstract concepts, solve problems and develop critical thinking skills. I taught all core subjects; reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and health.

I am dedicated to exemplifying compassionate support and service in the field of education, utilizing my gifts and talents to create revived energy and enthusiasm for the love and wonderment of learning.

When employing “Best Practice” it is more about “Passionate Practice” where there is an overflow of joy that spills over onto others in our life: I see beyond the behaviors and go directly to the heart of the child and meet them there.

I help children joyfully experience success in their acquisition of the fundamental components of learning. I cultivate a positive mindset that encourages educational exploration by proving effective intervention using personalized instruction in an intimate setting.

As a reading coach I have strong expertise in literacy education and teaching methods. With 20 plus years teaching grades K-4, I have become well versed at developing successful readers and writers across all content areas and grade levels. I have served on Literacy Teams to develop, implement and evaluate programs in reading. I have continued course work in evidence-based phonics training with authentic literacy-encompassing word recognition, reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, spelling, and expressive writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an elementary school teacher I have 20-plus years experience helping students successfully learn and apply important concepts while feeling empowered by their newly acquired knowledge. I prefer to use a hands-on approach to help students understand abstract concepts, solve problems and develop critical thinking skills. I taught all core subjects; reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and health.

Handwriting

Handwriting is an important skill linked to basic reading and spelling achievement. The early years are especially critical for handwriting instruction. With the young learner I focus on initially learning the motor pattern with correct formation of the letter. I integrate handwriting with letter sound instruction. I work on legibility which involves readability of letters, as well as spacing. With older students I assess speed of both forms of writing. I teach both manuscript and cursive handwriting.

Phonics

As a reading coach I have strong expertise in literacy education and teaching methods. With 20-plus years teaching grades K-4, I have become well versed at developing successful readers and writers across all content areas and grade levels. I have continued course work in evidence-based phonics training with authentic literacy-encompassing word recognition, reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, spelling, and expressive writing. As a PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) teacher, I matched literacy instruction to specific literacy needs.
