About Barbara

As a 29 year veteran English teacher, I have always believed that teaching involves more than intellectual growth and skills development. I want my students’ education to include opportunities for personal and social development, so that they can be prepared for the realities of life. I teach them that through their own personal power they can accomplish anything they desire for themselves, and even if they fall short today, as long as the sun continues to shine, they can make positive changes towards their dreams. Over the course of my extensive teaching career, I have developed many instructional strategies to help my student improve reading, writing and overall organization skills that will enhance learning, thus helping them become stronger and more efficient writers, readers, and test takers.

Whether a student has a desire to prepare for college, or needs practice that will help her become a better writer or reach a higher score on the SAT or ACT, I have created graphic organizers and practice materials to help develop effective reading, writing and clear thinking. Through these proven methods, my students have made vast improvements on state and district assessments. I can only hope that when my students enter into our vast and often times perplexing world, they take with them an eternal truth that I try to instill within them through my “life’s lessons.” It is my desire to bring them to the level of understanding that everything they hope to accomplish in their lives and anything they dare to dream can be found within themselves.

I have accomplished many personal and professional goals throughout my life, and the one I'm the most proud of is the dedication I have had to teaching English. I currently hold a valid teaching certificate for grades 6-12 and have earned 4 College Degrees in teaching English, Literature, and Communications. My innate creative writing ability, exceptional organizational skills and passion for teaching has made me into the teacher I am today, and I owe much of this success to my ability to make good decisions about strategies in various instructional activities.

My ultimate goal as an English teacher is to put my students on the path to success by preparing them for their future goals. Reading, writing, developing strong analytical skills, and building strong and effective test taking strategies are all essential to reaching any level of success. My 29 years experience in teaching has helped me strengthen my professional repertoire and make good decisions about how to present material. There is no greater feeling than to see the faces of the students who are held captive by the words that come from my heart and soul. In those moments, I realize the power I possess as an educator, and how careful I have to be with what I do and say. As many others in this profession, I did not dream of becoming a teacher as a child. I truly believe that through divine intervention I was chosen to hold this incredible position. I can now honestly say, I am living the American Dream!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
