About Peter

My name is Peter. After graduating college with honors with B.S in Mathematics, I originally used my skills to help grow and maintain several properties. Despite being successful in property management, I was not fulfilled. I wanted to give to others and share what I know. I gave up that career to pursue my passion: teaching. I moved to Jacksonville, married my wife, and started my career in education working in Middle Schools and have loved every minute for nearly ten years.

I have been teaching for over nine years since that day. Many people ask me,"What drives you to teach Middle School Mathematics? Isn't it hard with the students being such young teenagers?" My answer is, "Students at that age are at their most vulnerable. One bad moment or bad teacher, can forever turn a student off from math. It is not the students that are the challenge, but how to make math relate-able, relevant, and understandable to students that is the challenge." In my nine years teaching, it has never been the student could not learn, but my approach had to change to match my students' understanding and perception of mathematics. There are plenty of teachers who can do math very well, but few able to convey the understanding of math. As my rating as being Highly Effective, and most importantly the growth of my students during their time with me, I am confident I am one of those few teachers.

I am a highly qualified, current certified teacher in the state of Florida with a B.S. in Mathematics. I consistently have students excel on state exams through my education career. I have a passion for pre-algebra and Algebra 1 and have always requested to teach pre-algebra and/or algebra my entire nine year educational career. It is the foundation of so much that is needed in careers today and in the future. Students constantly ask, "Why do I need to learn this? I'll never use this when I grow up." I nearly always state Algebra is more than just equations and graphing, but learning the rules in a system and using those rules to your advantage, in this case answering a problem. It teaches self-discipline and attention to detail. It is possible you may never have a career using equations, but the skills learned, the way of thought to solve a problem (deductive reasoning) is a very valuable insight both in and out of mathematics. It is my strong belief in my students and this philosophy that has allowed so many of my students to become successful.

If you want to push yourself into becoming the best math student you can be, I will do everything I can to help you achieve your goal. Every student can learn mathematics no matter what they may think. I look forward to hearing from you soon so we can discuss in more detail how we can work together and schedule our first meeting. Until then, be safe, happy, and never stop learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Prealgebra

I am a professionally licensed educator and have taught and tutored pre-algebra and algebra for nine years. I am also considered to be a highly effective educator both in Florida and Virginia. I do not just help with homework, but create a curriculum to address all weaknesses. Using information from the student, the parents, and (when possible) the current math teacher, a plan of action is created. This focused attention has aided my students both in and out of the classroom.
