About Robert

I have always had a passion for helping others to learn. Beginning as a high school student, I taught classes for the Duval County School Board Continuing and Lifelong Learning Program. In college, I completed my internship for teaching English at Ed White High School. Last year, I volunteered twice a week to teach English as a Second Language to a group of adults near Washington, D.C. I loved every minute of it, and I was truly touched by my students' commitment and appreciation.

I have a bachelor's degree in English Education, and have volunteered as an ESL / ESOL teacher for two years. Since 2015, I've worked as an Online ESL instructor for a company based in Beijing, where I work with children, college students, and business professionals. I've delivered hundreds of presentations around the world at education conferences, have worked extensively with Ministries of Education around the world, and have been featured on Korean national television. I've had articles published in the Poet's Pen, Good Old Boat Magazine, Latitudes and Attitudes Magazine, Internet World Magazine, and The Florida Times-Union.

I am confident in my ability to tutor beginning, intermediate, and advanced students in the English language arts skills. I look forward to helping you or your students in improve your English skills!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am pursuing a master's degree in English at the University of North Florida. I'm pretty confident that I can help a high school student master the English skills that an incoming college freshman will be expected to possess. Also, I worked in the testing industry (i.e., Scantron) for nearly 20 years. I was their Director of International Assessments, and I am an expert on standardized assessments.

ACT Reading

I am a 46 year-old man who is pursuing a master's degree in English at the University of North Florida. For over 20 years. I worked in the academic testing industry. I was the Director of International Assessments for Scantron for many, many years and worked with countless Ministries of Education around the world. I am an expert of testing, and have worked with test developers, psychometricians, subject matter experts, etc., for many years.

American History

I read about American history with a voracious appetite. I compete in trivia games here in Jacksonville, and almost always land "in the money," largely due to my knowledge of American history. I am the 11th-generation decedent from a passenger on the Mayflower, which landed in present-day Plymouth, MA in 1620.

Bible Studies

I attended an independent, fundamentalist, Baptist school from grades 3-8. Since that horrible experience, I have become a devout atheist and have REALLY studied the Bible. I mean, REALLY studied it. I can quote scripture, describe Biblical events "in context" and explain to anyone (children or adults) why it's merely a collection of Bronze-Age myths. God! I'd love to get a gig where I'm tutoring about the Bible! Through years of involuntary indoctrination, I am intimately familiar with the Bible (especially the Authorized King James version of 1611).

English

I am a native American English speaker who has a bachelor's degree in English Education. I am currently pursuing a master's degree in English at the University of North Florida. I work in the university's Writing Center and tutor undergraduate and graduate students (and sometimes professors!) in the art of writing. I have been published many times in local newspapers and national magazines.

ESL/ESOL

I have volunteered as an ESL instructor twice a week for two years. I've worked with dozens of students at all levels of English proficiency. I have been a guest English lecturer in a public school in Eutin, Germany, where I helped high school students improve their English abilities. Some of these lectures were professionally video recorded; I'd be happy to share them.

Grammar

I have been published in many newspapers, magazines, academic journals, and web sites over the years. It is very rare that an editor corrects my grammar before the document is printed / released to the the public. I am now working at the University of North Florida's writing center, where I'm helping professors of math, computer science, engineering, etc., prepare their papers for publication. It is truly amazing how many brilliant people have trouble with the rules of the English language.

Literature

I am earning a master's degree in English literature at the University of Florida. I have read countless books over the years. I am intimately familiar with the types of books studied in the academic environment.

Public Speaking

As the International Business Development Manager for a large American corporation, I have delivered hundreds of oral presentations to audiences around the world. My typical audience was 50 - 60 people who were usually involved in public education (either K12 or post-secondary) in their countries. I've presented to live audiences with as many as 2,000 attendees and I was once broadcast on the national education channel in Korea, which was seen by more than 2 million people.

Throughout the years, many coworkers expressed admiration for my ability to communicate with an audience and asked for tips and suggestions for their own presentations. I was always happy to oblige them.

Some of my presentations have been professionally videotaped. I would be happy to share with you a presentation that I delivered in Cairo a few years ago.

I should also mentioned that I took a formal class in public speaking while in college. I received an "A" in the class, and learned a lot from my professor about how to teach public speaking.

Reading

I'm pursuing a master's degree in English at the University of North Florida. I have read countless books over the years. Every day, I read the New York Times. Every week, I read the Economist magazine. I read constantly.

TOEFL

Educational Testing Services (ETS) developed and owns the TOEFL program. ETS was a primary customer of mine when I worked as a technical manager at Pearson Education, and I became an expert on the TOEFL education process and examination. I traveled to many countries to better understand the needs of students and ministries of education as it relates to English education.

Vocabulary

I am pursuing a master's degree in English at the University of North Florida. I also happen to have a bachelor's degree in computer science. Over the years, I have learned many, many, many different English words and their correct meanings.

Writing

I am pursuing a master's degree in English at the University of North Florida. I work in the university's Writing Center and tutor undergraduate and graduate students (and sometimes professors!) in the art of writing. I have been published many times in local newspapers and national magazines.
