About Georgie

Reading and writing are two sides of the literacy coin, and one impacts the other. Every parent knows that success in both is critical for future success in every subject and to prepare your child for college and career. With a Master’s degree in Reading and multiple Florida teacher certifications from PreK to Grade 12, I work with students of all ages to help them learn strategies for developing fluency and comprehension. I think it is so important that my students look forward to each session, and I use games, progress awards, and other motivators to insure that each session is as fun as it is challenging.

As the parent of a struggling reader myself, I remember the anxiety and frustration experienced by both of us when she was young. Watching her become an excellent reader, writer, and public speaker has been a wonderful journey that I would like to share with others.

After learning more about your child’s academic history, I begin with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to help identify strengths and weaknesses. The program I develop for your child will be based on those results, your child’s personality and attention span, and any learning disabilities that may impact your child’s reading and writing skills. Occasionally, the evaluation will uncover learning problems such as dyslexia that have been overlooked in school assessments. For those students, or students already identified as having dyslexia, I use Orton-Gillingham methods with pacing that works for your child.

Above all, I always look for creative ways to motivate and challenge your unique child!

SMALL GROUP OPTION
In addition to one-on-one tutoring, I also offer small group instruction for students who are experiencing similar problems and in the same general age range. Some students benefit from this arrangement (or a combination of one-on-one and small group instruction), and this option can be more affordable for parents.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

As a Reading Specialist with a Master's degree in Reading, I am keenly aware that the schools are not equipped to provide the level of intensive intervention needed by students with dyslexia. Most students need a suitably paced Orton-Gillingham program in order to succeed. The International Dyslexia Association refers to this type of intervention as a "structured literacy" approach.

Since many students with dyslexia are already frustrated and discouraged when I first meet them, I add games, fun activities, and rewards for reaching achievable short term goals. On a personal level, I understand the anxiety and frustration that dyslexia can bring to both child and parent, having had a daughter with dyslexia. To see your child grow into reading and writing excellence is a wonderful thing!

Each student with dyslexia is unique. Those who receive an intensive intervention are able to succeed academically in school and college, and excel in their chosen career path.

GROUP OPTION
In addition to one-on-one tutoring, there are some students that may benefit from a small group intervention (or a combination of both). Small group instruction makes the intervention more affordable without sacrificing progress. If you have an interest in this option, I will evaluate your child to see if small group instruction could be considered.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a Reading Specialist with a Master's degree in Reading and multiple Florida teacher certifications from PreK to Grade 12. When students improve in reading comprehension, their grades in every subject also improve dramatically.

English

I have a Master's degree in Reading and I love to teach all aspects of English. Students that I have tutored in English/Language Arts have received early admission to Advanced Writing Workshops in college.

In addition to bringing up reading comprehension levels, I also help students with every aspect of the writing process, including organization, pre-writing, grammar, sentence structure (especially proficiency in writing complex sentences), and the use of literary devices. I frequently use samples of age appropriate literature to expose them to great writers.

Because I am so passionate about English/Language Arts myself, I am able to demystify this subject and help students develop better reading comprehension and writing skills.

Phonics

With a Master's degree in Reading, I believe that phonics is absolutely essential for becoming an excellent reader. Most schools offer some phonics, but it is apparent from national statistics that students are not getting enough of what they need in the classroom.

Phonics is the foundation for reading success, and I have helped many students build a better phonics foundation as they become excellent readers and spellers.

Reading

As a Reading Specialist with a Master's degree in Reading (and multiple Florida teacher certifications from PreK to Grade 12), I have worked with many struggling readers to help them develop fluency and comprehension skills.

It is very important to begin with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to determine why your child is struggling. The results of this evaluation help me to design a program that will work for your child.

Study Skills

I have spent many years in curriculum development and teaching, and have had the opportunity of developing numerous study aids, visuals, learning games, hands-on test preparation materials, and assessment tools. I have developed these learning enhancements for the classroom and for private students that I tutor. Because I have a Master's degree in Education, I am able to individualize my approach to helping students gain those important study skills needed to succeed academically. Every student learns differently - I find strategies that work best for your child.

I also emphasize the importance of understanding the material rather than memorizing facts. This involves helping students with reading comprehension, note taking, analysis, test preparation, concept mapping, outlining, as well as organizational skills involved in the writing process. All of these components of learning contribute to academic success.

Writing

With a Master's degree in Education (and multiple Florida teacher certifications from PreK to Grade 12), I have had the opportunity to help students of all ages become better writers. I have also spent many years as a professional writer in the training and development industry.

Students that I have tutored in Writing have received early admission into Advanced Writing workshops in college. I can help students in the areas of organization, pre-writing, grammar, sentence structure (especially proficiency in writing complex sentences), transitions, and the use of literary devices. I also use samples of age appropriate literature (mentor texts) to expose them to great writers.

Because I enjoy the writing process so much myself, I am able to demystify the elements of great writing for others. I would love to help students of any age become excellent writers.

Our first lesson with Miss Georgie was amazing and I feel completely optimistic about what my son will accomplish with her. She is kind and patient....two very importantly qualities when dealing with my hyper 6 year old. Gave me a complete assessment of his strengths and weaknesses. So thankful we found her!!
