About Tara

Hi! I am a Master of Human Relations, or so says the University of Oklahoma. I may teach children or adults and my teaching background began in the United States Air Force, formally. I became a Master Instructor, Instructor Supervisor, as well as juggling many other tasks. I volunteered here in Memphis and now I am in Jacksonville. I take this very seriously and I can help. I taught also, after the military, with adults, as an Instructor in aviation related material, particularly, geographic. This was with Raytheon, Inc. and later with the FAA. I am also an amateur artist in painting and drawing. I started a degree in Fine Arts with the University of Memphis, but had my only child prematurely and have not gone back. I have taken many workshops/seminars and am a graduate of the Baton Rouge Fine Arts Academy, with Larry Casso.

My background in reading, grammar, editing, proofreading is extensive. I have had to have numbers and words correct for over 20 years. When working in aviation and with a growing child, you must be sure to get it right. I am patient, caring, and innovative. I work well with boys and girls. I have written poetry and flown in fighter jets. I am trained as a tutor with Literacy Mid South. I have also volunteered with the Council on Aging. I am a member of the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW).

I have been laid off since May of 2013. I worked with the FAA as an instructor and Management and Program Analyst from August of 2012 to May of 2013. I was then laid off due to budgetary reasons in the federal government. Before that I worked with Raytheon, Inc. as an Instructor for the FAA incoming new students, from November of 2008 until July of 2012. I provided transition, Stage II training, development, assessment and testing of students. Once again, I was laid off due to budget constraints.

Previous to that, I worked with Washington Consulting Group as an instructor for the FAA. I provided the same instruction as with Raytheon, including hands on training in some areas of technological expertise in FAA controlling.

I was a mother at home before all of that, here in Memphis and now in Jacksonville, from September of 1998 . I have volunteered with my daughter's preschool and Kindergarten in art projects and in maintaining the Reading Library for the children, volunteered in Literacy and in Medicare counseling for the Aged. My education in Psychology covered Learning Theory and Cognition, primarily my Master of Human Relations involves helping in all areas, volunteering and giving to people in need. I am good at it and I can tutor anyone. My approach is structured and organized, providing a secure learning environment. I look at your learning style and match my approach to that, realizing your learning environment may be 180 degrees different. I can adjust to that with you. The challenges are broken down into manageable bites to eat. There is no elephant too large.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

I am a veteran Officer who has taken the AFOQT and have tutoring experience. I have also tutored the ASVAB which is not very different. Four consecutive sections of the ASVAB make up the qualifying grade for enlisted entrance into the military and the AFOQT is similar and tells the areas of interest that a person may choose to work in as an officer. There are subtests to teach and learn, also.

Painting

I have painted for several years. I paint primarily in watercolors and some acrylics. I have a couple of drawing courses in a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Memphis. I have taken painting and illustration workshops at Memphis College of Art. I finished a complete course of study in Mandeville, LA, at the Baton Rouge Fine Arts Academy, owned and operated by Larry Casso. Before that, I took numerous painting workshops with Dr. Joe Robinson, Bill Carter, and M. Douglas Walton. All are Edgar Whitney disciples. I understand composition, balance, the use of light and drawing skills.

Phonics

I am qualified since I have been an adult literacy tutor and determined grade level for reading. I have also determined if remedial reading, based upon a falling behind in understanding sounds in English exists, and how they play into reading well, or if a maintenance of phonics skills is required. I have had training in tutoring adults with literacy problems, and I can see how this impacts employment and the ability to make money as an adult. I can head off any problems and also combine sight reading with the phonics to get what is expected off of a written page before actually sounding out in a language that is loaded with rules. We can work around this and I am the patient teacher who can achieve this.

Study Skills

I am very qualified here because of my organizational skills. I have a Master of Human Relations, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and an Associates in General Education. My background, education and my experience makes me eligible for Study Skills tutoring. I have had to keep all of my flight organized when teaching, by making sure scheduling, materials and actually doing the job took place. I also taught aerial geography from maps with WCG, Raytheon and the FAA. I learned the maps, some with over 1000 memorized items better than the best students and could grade them, quickly. I can glean out what is necessary and put other items to the side.

Tara has exceptional experience and patience

Tara has exceptional experience and patience, knowing my daughter is working towards the ASVAB and having knowledge of her field of interest. She has constructed a training program tailored to those interest and she is persistent in her math teachings. In a week we'll challenge the practice ASVAB, that will be the honest assessment. I'm confident things will go very well. She is prepared and respo
