About Martha

My name is Martha H. I have two grown children and three grandchildren. I have been involved in the teaching profession since the early 1970's. I have taught students ranging in age from preschool to high school, from beginning readiness skills to algebra. I also tutored at Florida State College at Jacksonville (then FCCJ) for two years. Since 2005 I have been involved in teaching the VPK (Voluntary PreKindergarten) here in Florida. I am currently retired and looking for part-time work outside the classroom. I am currently certified in Specific Learning Disabilities (K-12), Emotionally Handicapped (K - 12), and PreK 3 - 3rd Grade. When students are struggling, I have the unique ability to figure out how they think, and how to help them overcome their difficulties. There is no greater satisfaction for me than to see that "light" come on in their eyes when they finally get a concept that we have been working on. I believe in a hands on, positive, and practical application approach when teaching. My name is Martha H. I have two grown children and three grandchildren. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am certified K - 12 and for two years I tutored algebra students at FSCJ with much success. The only reason I had to leave was due to not getting enough hours.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently certified K-12 with a Master's Degree in Florida. My areas of certification are Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Handicap, and Pre-K 3 - 3rd grade. I have been teaching reading comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics skills since 1979. Within this same time frame, I have also taught math skills such as addition (with and without regrouping), subtraction (with and without regrouping), multiplication, division, how to solve word problems, basic geometry, basic algebra, money skills, time skills, fractions, and decimals.

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics and decoding skills since I became a certified teacher in 1979. In 2005 I became involved in Florida's VPK (Voluntary PreKindergarten Program) for four-year-olds. A huge component of this program is letter recognition and sound.

Helpful and patient

She's great and helpful... very hands on with my daughter. To teach an ADHD child can be difficult. You have to have patience. My daughter struggles with math this is our 1st week but she is really excited.
