Mississippi College (English BA)
I will start by sharing my most recent teaching opportunity. I spent the past school year in Turkey, homeschooling for a family who is church planting. I taught two students in 11th grade. They use Sonlight curriculum which is very comprehensive, intense, and heavy on Bible, history, and literature. I taught all subjects.
In my 41 years of teaching, I was a classroom teacher. However, the homeschooling is much like tutoring, with one-on-one interaction. I also tutored my grandson in 5th and 6th grade for two years, all subjects. My strong areas are grammar, composition, literature, Bible, and history, but I do manage well with math and science.
My method is to sit beside the students, read the material and write the compositions as well, because it helps me to know how to guide them. I am happiest when I am learning myself or interacting with students who are learning.
I have taught 6th through 12th grade, English and French. My English classes have had fun reading plays, role-playing, learning to write well, watching movies related to the material, working in groups to write shortstories. French classes have always put on a French banquet with sidewalk cafe, Eiffel tower, student made art, acting out nursery rhymes in French.
I have taught in Alaska and enjoyed the Eskimo children. I have taught in Hawaii. I have taught in China, Chinese teachers. I have taught in Turkey two years. In Las Vegas, Mississippi and in Florida.
I look forward to working with you and helping you with your skills. I will start by sharing my most recent teaching opportunity. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am familiar with the classical period of Greece and Rome. The first great happening in the history of Greece was a war, the Trojan War. Homer tells about it in The Iliad, and The Odyssey. These epics were in my textbooks for years. Year after year I taught the epics and we drew maps and art work in connection with the story. And showed the video with Armand Asante.
Also there was a good selection on Socrates in my book. We studied his method of teaching and his courageous death.
I visited Greece and walked around the Parthenon, also saw the Corinth canal.

(I did walk on Hadrian's wall between England and Scotland.)
I have a copy of A Child's History of the World that covers Greece and Rome. That was required reading for my home schoolers in Turkey. Their curriculum called for a comparative paper on Athens and Sparta. They read a very intense book on Caesar Augustus. I have some interesting notes from that book. I saw statues of him and his wife in a museum in Turkey. Asia Minor was under the Greek empire at one time and the Roman empire later. There are ruins all over the place.
I toured the 7 churches of Revelation in Western Turkey. The churches that John saw and wrote letters to. I saw his grave in Ephesus.
