About Marilyn

I will start by sharing my most recent teaching opportunity. I spent the past school year in Turkey, homeschooling for a family who is church planting. I taught two students in 11th grade. They use Sonlight curriculum which is very comprehensive, intense, and heavy on Bible, history, and literature. I taught all subjects.

In my 41 years of teaching, I was a classroom teacher. However, the homeschooling is much like tutoring, with one-on-one interaction. I also tutored my grandson in 5th and 6th grade for two years, all subjects. My strong areas are grammar, composition, literature, Bible, and history, but I do manage well with math and science.

My method is to sit beside the students, read the material and write the compositions as well, because it helps me to know how to guide them. I am happiest when I am learning myself or interacting with students who are learning.

I have taught 6th through 12th grade, English and French. My English classes have had fun reading plays, role-playing, learning to write well, watching movies related to the material, working in groups to write shortstories. French classes have always put on a French banquet with sidewalk cafe, Eiffel tower, student made art, acting out nursery rhymes in French.

I have taught in Alaska and enjoyed the Eskimo children. I have taught in Hawaii. I have taught in China, Chinese teachers. I have taught in Turkey two years. In Las Vegas, Mississippi and in Florida.

I look forward to working with you and helping you with your skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught 20th Century World history last year. Ofcourse there was much in there of American history as well.

Taught American history in Hawaii a short time.

Taught American history when covering classes when teachers were out.

Bible Studies

I completed 6 hours of Bible in college.

I taught Sunday school classes in my church for years and ran a successful children's program in my church as well.

I tutored my grandson's Bible course as well as the Bible and apologetics course in the Sonlight curriculum in my homeschooling teaching.

Classics

I am familiar with the classical period of Greece and Rome. The first great happening in the history of Greece was a war, the Trojan War. Homer tells about it in The Iliad, and The Odyssey. These epics were in my textbooks for years. Year after year I taught the epics and we drew maps and art work in connection with the story. And showed the video with Armand Asante.

Also there was a good selection on Socrates in my book. We studied his method of teaching and his courageous death.

I visited Greece and walked around the Parthenon, also saw the Corinth canal.

When I lived in Turkey, I saw Greek and Roman ruins, a 2000 year old settlement behind the ridge behind the house. I saw Roman ruins in Perge and Side and Aspendos and Antalya.

There is a place near there that was too hard for Alexander the Great to take it. It was too hard to walk it for me. My friends had been.

(I did walk on Hadrian's wall between England and Scotland.)

I have a copy of A Child's History of the World that covers Greece and Rome. That was required reading for my home schoolers in Turkey. Their curriculum called for a comparative paper on Athens and Sparta. They read a very intense book on Caesar Augustus. I have some interesting notes from that book. I saw statues of him and his wife in a museum in Turkey. Asia Minor was under the Greek empire at one time and the Roman empire later. There are ruins all over the place.

I toured the 7 churches of Revelation in Western Turkey. The churches that John saw and wrote letters to. I saw his grave in Ephesus.

The college courses I took that apply to this age were English 421 Classical Literature, Philosophy 315 of the Christian Religion.

I've been to Constantinople (Istanbul) where the church survived for 1100 years after Rome fell to barbarians in the 400's AD.

Reading

In Duval Co, there is a 25 book challenge. My students always participated in that.

I had reading sessions in small groups with questions in back of books the students had to read and then fill out sheets with summaries.

I prepared students for FCAT for years, the standardized testing in Florida.

Religion

I have an interest in the different religions. I have compiled a personal chart and shared this with my students last year. The Catholic church was the prevailing church for many years. Luther broke away. Henry VIII broke away. Each of these divisions continued to subdivide and many denominations developed.
My college transcript lists Life of Christ 3 hours, Biblical Orientation 3 hours, philosophy-the Christian Religion 3 hours, Comparative Religions 3 hours.
I was a minister's wife. We pastored churches four years. I taught in church during high school, after I married for years.

Social Studies

I have an acute interest in history and prefer to read history and biography to fiction. I have a personal library of history and biography books.

I took Western Civilization in college and tutored a course on North and South America. I also taught 20th Century World History in a home school setting. For that class, I read the material and had the students read it to me. They answered the questions given in the curriculum, then we discussed the answers as well as enjoyed a great picture book.

I have had students prepare a timeline and include art with each section. I also have prepared Bingo games with the material learned before, and I have pulled movies that relate to our material many times.

I have taught vocabulary skills for 41 years.

Sometimes with excellent workbooks, sometimes not.
