Hello, My name is Ms Bresnahan and I have been tutoring children on a one-to-one basis for the last two years. I have been a volunteer at several local elementary schools for the last three years. I was also a classroom aide while acting as a tutor at said schools. I worked with ESE and ESOL children helping them build their math and reading comprehension skills.
While working with these students I worked on letters, sounds and phonics skills. We worked on comprehension through reading and follow up questions as well as writing to prompts. The children were encouraged in the lower elementary grades to draw pictures to enhance their written work. I also worked at a local charter school as a substitute teacher for K-8th grade. I assisted with tutoring children charged with boosting their skills in math, science, and reading. I was the Science Club mentor while there. In Science Club, we explored the many areas of science and how it relates to our everyday lives. We performed experiments and discussed the results in class meetings. I began private tutoring for one of the teachers while still active within the school. I currently tutor a 7th grader going into the 8th grade. We are working on math and science skills. I have also tutored for the FCAT for grades three through seven. I focused on math, science and reading comprehension and fluency. I have worked for Pearson grading FCAT writes for the past two years.
I use the reward system for my students. If they do well on the work we are doing I give them a treat from the treasure box or older children get a pen, a book or a certificate to a fast food restaurant. I also encourage them to reach a goal that is achievable. I have them write or verbally tell me what they need and then discuss the goals that we have set with the parents. Once goals are set, I then create a checklist and check off each one as we go. I find this helps them see that they are improving and shows them their hard work is paying off. I believe each child can achieve his or her goals by taking small steps and not look at the picture as a whole. I want your children to become a success in school and life. If there are more than one child in the family that requires tutoring it is an additional 15 dollars per child.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am currently working with ADD/ADHD students. They vary from Elementary to high school. I sit down with parents and teachers and try to work a plan that is best suited for the student's potential for educating. Then I work one and one and review the areas that a not withing the student's grasps and bring it down so they can catch on. I also worked within the classroom setting as well. I would love the opportunity to help these challenging children.
Math is just like reading. You must follow all the rules and master the basics prior to moving on. Math is a city map that has many paths to travel down and sometimes we cannot find out way out. So, I help my students find the right pathway and get to the stop on the math highway.
I have worked with students to pass the ASVAB.
I have a BS in biology.
I am a science teacher and have my degree in biology and chemistry.
I have tutored towards the TABE, CLast, and FCAT tests. I worked with both adults and high school students. I also tutored for FCAT writes and graded them. I worked with children k-10th and adults.
I have worked in a charter school k-8th grade as a substitute teacher. I also worked one on one tutoring for k-6. I also functioned as a teacher's assistant in k-6 environment. As a teacher's assistant, I worked with ESE children and others in all subject areas. I focused on reinforcement of the lessons that the teacher was teaching, assisting with grading, testing students.
I teach geometry currently. I have also tutored for over seven years.
My degree is a Biology with pre-med/dental track. I have taken 3 courses in Microbiology and enjoyed them. I still read articles in journals about microbes. I feel that I can contribute to the student.
I have taught for FCAT and CLAST exams for the state of Florida for the past 3 years. I am currently tutoring for the EOC for Algebra 1 and geometry for High school level. I enjoy the challenges of the students and these test modules we use.
I am currently working with 3 students privately on study skills. Study skills mean to me learning how to take notes and using them to extract what the teacher may want them to know. I have them use flash cards for vocabulary and science terms. I find having flash cards that pick out the key points. Study habits need to be strong prior to high school and should start in 4th grade.
