Having always enjoyed the subject of chemistry, I taught high school chemistry for 8 years as a second career. I retired in June 2011 but my certification is valid through June 2016.
I have successfully taught all levels of Chemistry from General Chemistry to Honors Chemistry and Advanced Placement Chemistry in two different Duval County high schools neither of which was an academic magnet. My students have always been among the best performers county-wide in any chemistry/science standardized testing. Past students have reported to me that they have been very successful in their college level chemistry because of the my course. My AP students have had great success on the nationwide AP test.
Former students have told me I prepared them very well for college level chemistry. AP Chemistry is supposed to be a college level course and I take that seriously. I am well qualified to tutor college level beginning chemistry courses.
The success of my students has led to me receiving merit pay awards for the last four years I taught.
I use a variety of methods to explain chemistry concepts including various types of technology. I try very hard to connect chemistry topics to familiar real life experiences. I use easily understood methods for the math calculations in chemistry which often cause students difficulty. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
