Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

Having tutored ACT Reading with several students, all have passed the test. In fact, some of them had to re-learn such things as phonics, grammar and reading comprehension. Many wrote journals which helped them because reading what you have written is much easier than reading a textbook. This method gave them a head start for the test.

ADD/ADHD

I have been a Special Education Teacher for over 15 years. I am very familiar with ADD/ADHD.

American History

American History is one of my specialties. The vast majority of my students see their grades improve due to my unique method of tutoring. This gives me great satisfaction, both for them and for myself.

Art History

Art History has been a subject of great interest to me since my college days. I took enough courses to enable me to minor in Art History if I had chosen to do it. My tutoring experience includes many students who have needed assistance in Art History. The vast majority of them have passed this subject with my help.

Aspergers

My education includes a Master's degree in Education with an emphasis on Special Education. As a result, I have tutored many students with Aspergers with great success. This is due to the fact that I individualize instruction based on each specific learning modality. In fact, I intend to go back to graduate school to pursue an additional Master's degree in Special Education in order to better tutor students with special needs.

Bible Studies

As a teacher with 15 years of experience, I have learned a great deal about Bible Studies. Often these are topics that others are surprised to find are contained in both the Old and New Testaments. In addition, there are many historical figures who are very important that people are mostly unaware exist or have existed. I have often taught others about this very important subject.

Biology

As a person with a BA in Human Development, I have studied the biological sciences extensively while in college and while getting my MS degree in Education.

Dyslexia

Having been a special education teacher for over 15 years, I have use many methods when tutoring students with Dyslexia. These include, but are not limited to Wilson Learning, Lindamood Bell and Lexia. My primary area of expertise is reading. This includes phonics, grammar and reading comprehension. I also tutor students in English composition. Most of my students write in journals because, in my experience, it is much easier to read what you have just written. The methods I use really work! Plus I have current references available for all.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher for over 15+ years and I am now working as a self-employed tutor to both children and adults. Ninety percent of my students reach/exceed their academic potential after working with me.

Elementary Science

As a teacher with over 15 years of experience, Elementary Science is one of my areas of expertise, including, but not limited to, both the biological and physical sciences.

English

I have been teaching English for over 15 years. The methodology I use for teaching this subject has proven to be successful every time I have used it.

European History

I have tutored many students in the ESL/ESOL tests. All of them have passed with flying colors. It may be because of the methods I use to tutor them. I individualize instruction based on each of my student's unique learning. I believe that's what makes a big difference.

Geography

I have taught many students to get them ready to take the GED. Not one of them has failed as yet. I have been tutoring for this test for at least four or five years. I individualize instruction based on each of my student's unique learning styles.

Handwriting

As a teacher with over 15 years of experience, in recent years I have discovered that handwriting is no longer taught in our schools. In my considered opinion, in order to be an educated person, one must have legible handwriting. During my training, handwriting was a required course. It still ought to be.

Literature

As a tutor since 2006, literature is one of my specialties. I am familiar with many authors from all over the world. As a writer myself, I enjoy helping others develop their own personal style, if they so desire. I am also happy to assist anyone who is interested in literature.

Phonics

I have taught phonics for over 15 years. My efforts have always been successful. I especially enjoy teaching Reading, for which phonics is required.

Public Speaking

Having been a public speaker for over 15 years, I have traveled to Canada, Western Europe, and the Caribbean to make my presentations. I started my career as a motivational speaker, based in Beverly Hills, California. Then I became a sales consultant in the financial services industry. This involved weekly travel speaking to participants on various topics, including but not limited to, consultative sales. Eventually, I started my own business in Jacksonville, Florida.

Reading

I have been a teacher for over 15 years and have taught reading for many years. For example, I am extremely knowledgeable in phonics, word recognition and test preparation.

Religion

As a student of world religions myself, I have extensive knowledge of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. My studies include the sacred texts of all of these religions. Many of my students in the past have benefited greatly from the knowledge I possess in these areas. My qualifications have been acknowledged by clergy in my area. They are especially impressed by my knowledge of such books as The Gnostic Gospels, The Gospel of James, and The Gospel of Thomas.

Sociology

My Bachelor's degree in college was Human Development. This includes sociology, psychology, and physiology. Since those days, I have continued to study sociology in order to stay up-to-date with current research. This is a fascinating area for anyone, once you get your mind around it.

Special Needs

I have certification in Exceptional Student Education from the Florida Department of Education.

Vocabulary

Having been a teacher of English for over 15 years and a voracious reader, I have a wide-ranging vocabulary and a great ability to teach new words to my students.

World History

Having been a teacher for over 15 years, World History is one of my areas of expertise.
