Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

English was one of my favorite subjects in high school. In preparation for an ACT test, it is important to know grammar rules, and punctuation. The most common way is to study your own speech patterns while you read sentences and apply the rules of punctuation that best fits. The ACT English test tries to stump test takers by forcing them to over think and use unnecessary time on this portion of the test. Therefore learning test taking skills is important on for this portion of the test.

ACT Reading

I taught ACT and FCAT preparation for several years. Many schools are requiring from a 20-22 in the area of reading before accepting students into college. The competition is getting so tough that many parents are hiring tutors to help their children take this test with ease. Reading includes Vocabulary, Comprehension, Reading Strategies, Phonics and Phonemic awareness. Learning to use key words in text to match questions with answers, and the process of elimination to eliminate incorrect choices is necessary to make an acceptable score on the ACT. Test taking skills can be easily developed to help students become relaxed and successful when taking the test.

I am certified in ESE K-12 and worked with ESE students 11+ years in Elementary, SED center, Middle School and High School. I enjoy helping students achieve. It is the process of catering to the interest and the needs of children that help stimulate personal growth and the will to become independent learners.

Career Development

I have Master level courses in guidance counseling. I worked with students at various high schools settings as a case manager exploring academics and careers. Testing for career interest and matching results with skills and personality helps students gear their careers toward the right direction. Applying for colleges, financial aid, and scholarships to assist students in reaching their goals require forethought and preparation. This course assist students in getting a clear picture of the necessary test and requirements to enter the school of their choice and graduate with the degree required for their desired career.

Ear Training

I have over 20 years' experience in piano and playing the keyboard by ear. I have had Music classes and workshops in Ear training as well as putting on musical/vocal workshops for youth throughout the city.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students K-6 in subjects including Math, Science, Reading, and Language Arts for over 8 years.

Elementary Math

We use math everyday, but trying to get our youngters to think about it logically is sometimes frustrating. Counting, using manipulatives, sorting, adding, multiplying and dividing are the basic operations that help our children learn measurement, algebra and even geometry. Learning key words in story problems, and utilizing plain old logic in life are our best sources for understanding math.

Elementary Science

According to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."
Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. We use this system to explain phenomena thru experimentation and observation. One method of discovery is thru science projects. Learning scientific principals and laws help us to discover, describe and explain why certain principles apply and how they fit in our environment. As we organize information we can gain knowledge that helps us to improve our world. What is the purpose of science? Perhaps the most general description is that the purpose of science is to produce useful models of reality.

I've taught ESL/ESOL students in elementary and in a small alternative setting. I've also tutored students, created lessons that were geared toward what students needed to learn. I've worked on conversation, word recognition, spelling, reading and writing as well as math. Students learned to adapt and to use forms of communication that bridged the gap in Languages.

English grammar is important in writing and composing essays for class. Students who focus on learning the rules and applying them have more success. Students who learn to communicate in writing become very valuable in the workplace. Grammar includes parts of speech, subject and verb agreement, phrases sentence structure, and punctuation.
Grammar is one of the several sciences of languages. Philology, the science of the history and creation of language, includes: phonetics, a science of articulate sounds; etymology, a science of word origins; and grammar, a science of how we use words.

We can define grammar as a "science of language" that has specific parts—and laws on how we use these parts in a sentence.

Microsoft Word

Frustrated with Word Processing and learning the computer? Today's world requires
efficiency and learning how to use a computer effectively can increase your job skills and your bargaining power in the workforce. Learn how to use Microsoft word to generate documents and use various techniques to make an attractive resumes and letters.

I have experience teaching reading, including phonics, to elementary student K-5.

I have over 20 years playing the piano by ear and some site reading, theory, and playing professionally using a keyboard and equipment. I also have experience laying tracks and composing music for the gospel genre.

Public Speaking

As an instructor, I lecture to students during direct instruction and present mini-lessons on various topics. As a reading teacher, I have read stories and presented lessons orally. As a minister in training and a trainer, I have created speeches, critiqued presenters and delivered speeches and presentations in front of audiences 5-90 years old and arenas from 2-10,000.

Reading involves phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. I use strategies to help students learn the best way they can achieve. It is important that they discover how to become independent readers by discovering their own modalities and using them to become successful.

Special Needs

I am certified K-12 in ESE which is Special Education. I have had the opportunity to work with students in all spectra and facits of ESE; however, I enjoy working with SLD or Students with Learning Disabilities. In high school, many students had success stories as they developed their learning modes and became their own advocates in career choices.

Study Skills

As a teacher of students K-12 and above for over 15 years, I realize the importance of study skills, time management, and organization. Finding the key that unlocks a student's abilities and their interest, along with the best way they learn is the foundation to developing great study habits. Students who achieve aren't always the most proficient in a subject, but a person who studies and understands how to trigger their brains to remember can be just as accomplished. Study habits can be applied to any subject and situation in life.

Developing vocabulary is an ongoing lifelong skill. Reading helps build our background knowledge, but as we encounter words, we must learn how to study them and apply them to the literature we read. As we encounter different occupations in life we find a vast amount of terminology that only applies to that skill. However, as we discover word roots, etymology, history and origins of words, it helps us to better understand how those words fit into our text's meaning. Learning prefixes, suffixes, and grammatical patterns in word choices also help us build writing skills.

Voice (Music)

I have been teaching choirs and small group ensembles for over 20 years. I have taken mini workshops and vocal instruction from other Musician/vocal teachers, and actively sing for various events.

Learning different writing styles that are acceptable in society are necessary for school and job placement. We will explore different styles of writing including: Creative, Persuasive, Expository, Narrative, Letter writing, Business Letters, personal writing, and different types of communication. Our focus is to help students become fluent writer using grammar to assist with structuring sentences, paragraphs, and essays, as well as formal and informal letters.
