Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have had an active and fulfilling business career working with such well known firms as Shell, Gillette, STP and in diverse industrial settings including Pharmaceuticals, Automotive Aftermarket products and manufacturing operations. My career path encompassed positions of buyer, purchasing manager, director of purchasing, Vice President of Materials, Vice President of Operations and CEO. I've held full profit and loss responsibility and helped staff develop both short and long-range strategic plans. During my tenure as CEO of a manufacturing firm, we doubled sales and earnings over a three year period in a market sector where others were losing share and margin. My strength in the business arena rests with my ability to help build effective teams and enable them to achieve results they had not considered possible.

As a college student, I found it very necessary to develop and practice sound study habits. These included reserving specific time each day to study texts and notes from lectures, underlining key points, making summary notes, and reviewing all materials to ensure that I was capturing the most salient points from the available materials. Prior to exams, I reviewed all notes, underlined materials and practice questions to make myself comfortable with the material. By adhering to this regimen, I guaranteed myself success and can show students exactly how this system works.

English

I write for business people frequently and have learned what effective, clear and concise writing is. I've worked with students at the elementary and middle school levels and find great satisfaction when those students achieve more than they ever thought they could. Having scored FCAT writing papers for fourth and eighth grade students, I know what is required to obtain full credit and understand how to help the students grasp the concepts that will better their scores.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with young adults helping them with writing correctly in English, teaching the meaning of colloquial expressions and the more often used everyday or slang expressions most often used by English speakers. I also traveled to Spain and worked with Spanish speaking professionals who needed to converse in English as part of their jobs. They were enrolled in a total immersion course and not allowed to speak in their native tongue. At the end of one week, the people I worked with were both comfortable and considerably more confident in their ability to converse in English as a second language.

Government & Politics

I majored in Political Science while attending NYU. My specific studies included parliamentary forms of government, totalitarian systems, areas studies, which included Middle East, Africa and South America. Following graduation, I was accepted for Graduate Studies in this field at NYU, but subsequently served in the military overseas and did not pursue my graduate degree. I have remained an avid follower of politics and government throughout my career and have coupled my education in political science with studies in history and geopolitics.

Public Speaking

I am well versed in Public Speaking. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to make presentations to small and large groups. My training includes college courses in public speaking as well as specific training I received from several employers in the techniques of public presentations. While in the military, I also was required to make presentations to groups of two hundred or more at a time.

I can teach anyone to utilize their own abilities to make effective presentations to any size group and overcome the natural nervousness that often accompanies standing in front of others to make a speech.

Reading

With a Bachelors Degree from New York University and many years of corporate experience, I am well versed in tutoring individuals of all ages in reading comprehension and effective writing. I have specific experience reading and scoring student FCAT papers in Science, Math, Reading and Writing. This hands-on experience qualifies me to help those needing assistance in improving their individual FCAT scores.

Study Skills

As a college student, I found it very necessary to develop and practice sound study habits. These included reserving specific time each day to study texts and notes from lectures, underlining key points, making summary notes, and reviewing all materials to ensure that I was capturing the most salient points from the available materials. Prior to exams, I reviewed all notes, underlined materials and practice questions to make myself comfortable with the material. By adhering to this regimine, I guaranteed myself success and can show students exactly how this system works.

Writing

While I specialize in helping individuals speak and understand the English language better, I also work with them to improve their overall writing skills. I find that many students of English are able to speak the language quite well, but they struggle when writing it. My style of instruction includes assignments where the student writes several paragraphs on a subject and we jointly correct it. When reviewing writing errors, I demonstrate alternate ways of saying things; thereby giving the student more than one solution to putting thoughts into written statements. I do not believe in having students memorize a bunch of rules, rather I stress simplicity and practice in improving one's writing.
