I was born and raised in Yunnan Province, People’s Republic of China, and am fluent in Mandarin Chinese. While residing in China, I attended the University of International Business and Economics - Kunming, majoring in International Trading. Upon completion of my studies, I found employment with a Hong Kong based trading company, serving as the local chief representative of the Kunming office. My primary duties included translating documents from English to Mandarin and Mandarin to English as well as serving as an interpreter for foreign business professionals. In 2006 I immigrated to the United States. My English skills were developed through diligent study with a private tutor while living in China. In 2005, I sat for the TOEFL, scoring a 520 out of a possible 660. Also, based on my level of proficiency in both Mandarin and English, I was accepted into the Translators’ Association of Yunnan Province, China. Currently, I am self-employed, offering translation and interpretation services to local businesses. I have also worked with a few adult learners who were interested in learning Chinese. As part of this effort, I have become familiar with my local and state educational standards (Florida’s SSS), as well as those of the College Board’s AP Chinese program of study. Presently, I work from the Learning Chinese with Me, Chinese Made Easier, and Business Chinese texts. As a native Chinese speaker with tutoring experience, it is my desire to help people gain a better understand of China and its culture.

Excellent Tutor

I have been extremely satisfied with my Chinese lessons from Caroline. The lessons have given me a very good foundation for speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin Chinese, and I continue to make consistent progress through our weekly lessons. Homework assignments have emphasized material from each lesson as well as returning to material from previous lessons for all important review. In addition to the regular lessons from the textbook, we have covered areas that will be important for me in my upcoming trip to China - Chinese currency, food, culture, customs, etc. I feel Caroline has done an excellent job of preparing me for my trip to China.

Pleasant but average teacher

Tutor has a pleasant personality and might be good for kids but does not have a method to teach. She tends to stick with the text book and does not really know how to make the student practice orally the material learned to that point orally. She does not want to check homework unless typed and she's reluctant to read herself to show right pronunciation or to correct student. She does not do any drilling in class, or very little. Student (adult) has to do it by himself at home!

Patient and Positive

Caroline has a positive, upbeat personality that encourages the same qualities in her student. We are only two lessons into the relationship, but so far - so good!
