Mary Baldwin College (Theater)
Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Master's)
I always knew I wanted to work with children in some fashion. Although my undergraduate degree is in theater, I was really an education student who needed a major. I graduated with my early childhood education certification. Most of the jobs I have held in the last 25 years have been with children in one capacity or another. I have worked with children of all ages and have a good understanding of the differences in these ages. Not all children learn in the same manner, and my experience has helped in that capacity. I went on the obtain a master's degree this time in Christian education but still in a field of learning. It has also served me well.
Although I have done a lot of math tutoring, I am qualified and have tutored in a multiple of elementary subjects. Several of my students required me to work with whatever topic from school they needed help from.
Furthermore, my experience with Kumon math and reading has not only prepared me on those subjects but taught me valuable lessons that I can transfer to all subjects. While I am the tutor and usually helping others reach their potential, I recognize that I will forever be learning and welcome the chance to do so. Working for Kumon helped strengthen my knowledge and better equipped me for a career as a tutor.
Once I have agreed to work with a student, I am fully committed. The time I reserve for tutoring is golden and I honor that time. While I expect my students to be committed to that time and be there when planned, I also expect the same of myself, knowing that they would as well. I like to work in a quiet environment with no distractions and while working, things like cell phones go off. I am happy to travel to a student or have them come to me, whichever is preferred.
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you in the future!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
When I was in undergrad school, I graduated with my early childhood education certification. I have taught math and reading to a variety of children with ages ranging from 3 - 16. I have also worked individually with a second and third grader working in all subjects taught in school. I enjoy helping children reach their potential in all subjects.
In past tutoring jobs, I have successfully helped students practice and improve their handwriting skills. I have assisted with both the printed and the cursive form of writing. I was specifically tasked with helping a student practice and improve cursive writing skills.
Through my work at Kumon, I have worked with students on phonics skills. Upon finishing my undergraduate degree, I took a teaching job whose reading program was based on phonics. In both these situations, I was able to assist students in successfully learning phonics.
While privately tutoring a student, spelling was a subject we worked on each week. During that time, the student I worked with was able to improve his spelling scores and ability.
