After 35 years in business in 2009, I began working in literacy at the library, working one-on-one with learners who wanted to improve their reading comprehension skills. Gradually as need was evidenced, I added math, algebra, geometry, grammar, essay writing and GED preparation. When I lost my job in 2010, I decided to go back to school and earn my MBA, but by the time I had received it from University of Phoenix in 2011, tutoring had become my profession of choice. I no longer had a desire to work in the business world. Instead I retired and became a full time volunteer with the Lake County and then the Citrus County Library Literacy programs.
The approach I use combines patient explanation and reiteration with immediate practice of the principles studied, individual work for the learner between sessions with immediate feedback. Homework is marked and feedback is delivered at the session it is turned in. Encouragement is a key ingredient in my teaching style. Emphasis is on what was done correctly rather than errors. For learners preparing to take standardized tests, frequent timed tests help reduce test anxiety and develop confidence.
Former learners have been young men preparing to retake the military ASVAB, young men and women who graduated from high school without the required skills to get a diploma, working adults who needed to improve basic math, reading and grammar skills to progress at work, and people of all ages who want to improve skills in order to find work. So far my experience with the tutor Carla has been good. She is timely and I think she is doing everything that we expected.
She was very concerned talking with me because English is my second language. I could improve my talking skills (fluency) and got a lot of new words. Now I am more comfortable in talking with other people.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Course material would cover signed numbers, solving equations, algebraic word problems, exponents, and roots, and algebraic graphs.
Assisted several young people who were studying to either pass the ASVAB or raise their scores. All eventually passed the test.
As an Evangelical Christian and then as a Catholic nun, I have spent years studying the scriptures.
35 years in the insurance business in both small and large companies on both the company and agency side, with an MBA, gives me very good credentials for helping people understand business.
I currently teach pre-GED math to adults in the Citrus county area. The topics covered are those of elementary math. Consequently, I am very familiar with these topics and also the methods for teaching learners who have had difficulty with these subjects in the past.
This course of study covers parts of speech, spelling and vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Practice exercises with homonyms, capitalization, punctuation, synonyms and antonyms help learners integrate grammar, which can be pretty dry and boring without them.
I worked with several ESOL learners when I first began tutoring. To improve my techniques, I have taken several workshops on conversation and methods for teaching English to non-native English speakers. Although I use the direct method of teaching, I also teach English grammar to Pre-GED learners and that gives me a basis for introducing grammar to ESOL learners.
I currently teach language arts to students preparing to take the GED exam. We cover all the parts of speech and all the parts of a sentence, some spelling, punctuation, possessives, capitalization, subject verb agreement, plurals, proper pronoun cases, and 6 different verb tenses.
I have used Publisher for 10 years. I have used it to publish flyers, 16 page brochures and a 40 page handbook.
Word was the first word processing program I learned in the 1990s and I have been using it ever since. I am very proficient in all versions through 2010.
Reading depends on two main skills, sight word recognition and reading comprehension. I am familiar with several systems which develop these skills. Voyager, Endeavor, Reading Wise, and Laubach.
There were 2 quantitative math classes in my MBA program both covered some statistics, but the Applied Business Research and Statistics course was statistics in depth. I got an A in both classes. I also had a statistics component in my CPCU course work. (Pass/Fail) Although I do not now use statistics in my every day work, I have the base and understanding necessary to help an undergraduate student master the subject.
Having completed my MBA and CPCU (a graduate level insurance certification), as well as being a life long student, I know how to study. I would be happy to help someone else acquire these skills.
