About Kevin

Price varies depending upon driving distance and subject; inquire for details.

5 years teaching experience (middle & high school), 3 years as an adjunct professor (undergraduates, graduates, and distance), one year as a teaching assistant in my Ph.D. program. I am interested in meeting the student at his or her own needs. I work best with middle school to high school kids (6-12) and college students.

WRITING: True writers know that they always need to improve their writing. The question is, do you or your student need my help? I have a simple approach that integrates the classics to show you the three basic problems in all writing and give you methods for fixing them. For the past two years, I have taught grammar and writing to 7th graders, as well as advanced composition and public speaking to 12th graders. I see results with all my students.

MATH: I also have taught geometry and would be able to tutor in that subject as well. I work very well with numbers, and scored near the 90th percentile in GRE math.

RELIGION: Catholic school student? I could help in any and all Catholic subjects--Scripture, Church history, morality, ethics, philosophy, social justice, lives of the saints, etc.

TESTING: Need to boost the SAT or GRE scores? I can help with some effective strategies. My scores were strong (above or near 90th percentile in math, verbal, and writing), and I would be glad to share them, along with my help, with you.

Classes I have taught directly or will be teaching next year include writing: 7th grammar/writing, 12th journalism, 12th advanced composition/speech; math: geometry; religion: 6th grade religion, 10th grade Sacred Scripture, 12th grade morality/apologetics, 11th social justice, sacraments, lives of the saints/Church history; foreign language: New Testament Greek.

My experience includes 6 years working at the Roanoke Times (3 as an editorial assistant, 3 years as a copy editor, correcting writing mistakes, crafting headlines, and designing front pages); 2 years as public relations writer at Franciscan University of Steubenville; teaching RCIA to college students during Master's studies; and 2 additional years teaching multiple subjects above at small K-12. I taught for 3 years at JSerra Catholic (Orange County); I am an adjunct professor JP Catholic University teaching Biblical Greek I and II (San Diego, since June 2011 ... while there, I also taught a class on Classical Rhetoric). I am currently a Ph.D. candidate at Ave Maria University, where I will be teaching in the 2016-17 academic year in the highest field of study known to humankind! (theology, of course)

I am trained in Microsoft Word, InDesign, and Photoshop, I'm pretty tech savvy in general.

My hobbies include racquetball, chess, and billiards especially. I coach little league baseball and enjoy playing basketball.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am knowledgeable in Biblical Greek and am learning Biblical Hebrew. Fully equipped with Logos Bible Software, I walk you through exegesis of the New Testament and Septuagint (LXX) especially. Mystified by the Letter to the Hebrews? I took a class with a priest from the Pontifical Biblical Institute on this letter. I teach from a Catholic perspective, and freely incorporate the commentaries on Sacred Scripture by the Church Fathers.

Chess

I was vice president of my chess club in college, and admittedly spent way too much time playing chess on Yahoo. Though by no means am I an expert, I could teach beginners and raise them to intermediate status.

Classics

I have taught classical rhetoric to freshmen and sophomores at John Paul the Great Catholic University and grammar and logic in middle and high school settings. I would be glad to help you navigate through Cicero, Quintilian, Aristotle, Plato, and others, in their original languages or in English.

English

I have taught grammar, writing, and rhetoric in middle school, high school, and college settings. Taking a classical approach to writing instruction, I equip students with the tools they need to meet their immediate needs and establish long-term success.

Geometry

I taught geometry to a mix of 9th and 10th students. Several students came for personal tutoring. I have tutored through Wyzant in this subject.

Grammar

I have taught grammar in middle school (7th grade grammar/writing), high school (integrated into a class on advanced composition), and in college (integrated into my Biblical Greek classes).

GRE

My own GRE scores put me in or near the 90th percentile in verbal, quantitative, and writing. This was following a weak initial test. What did I do differently? Let me help you, too.

Greek

I have taught dozens of students Greek through my Biblical Greek I and II courses I have offered at John Paul the Great Catholic University. I am a self-learner and have been a student of the language for years following initial tutoring sessions. I will not only be able to tutor in the ancient language (both Koine and Attic Greek), but I will be able to set students on a path to self-learning. (Please note that this is Ancient Greek, not modern Greek.)

Hebrew

Shalom! So you are interested in learning classical Hebrew. Let me know what your needs are and I will meet you there, whether that be working with proper reading and pronunciation or figuring out how to parse the complex verb system. I can also help you understand the manuscript tradition and the textual apparatus. In my Ph.D. studies, we used Allen P. Ross's Hebrew text (I also am familiar with the Pratico-Van Pelt and Lambdin texts) and I earned the highest possible marks in the class over two semesters. My professor had taught the language for about 25 years, so I learned a lot from his pedagogy as well. I helped some classmates along the way and I have lots of experience tutoring in Biblical languages, such as Greek and Latin. In addition to directing you to some great resources, I would be glad to help you in your quest to learn this difficult but rewarding sacred language. (NB: I tutor in classical Hebrew for reading the Bible in its original language, not modern Hebrew for communicating in Israel.)

Latin

Salve! I have been through two Latin grammars, Wheelock's Latin and Moreland & Fleischer's Intensive Course. I regularly read articles in St. Thomas's Summa in Latin and have frequented Latin Masses in both the Tridentine and Novus Ordo forms. I myself had received personal tutoring in Latin and am now glad to assist others in understanding this sublime language as well.

Logic

I taught logic as propaedeutic in my introduction to philosophy course. It was my favorite class in my undergraduate studies and I have done extensive reading in the topic. As the art of reasoning, logic has been integral to each class I have taught. This subject comes alive with syllogisms, fallacies, enthymemes, and more! Learn about exciting things such as straw men, red herrings, and the square of opposition! We'll have fun.

Philosophy

I have integrated philosophical principles into nearly every class I've taught, and have taught Introduction to Philosophy to high school seniors.

Proofreading

I am a former copy editor and have worked in the publication of several books. I will not only catch your mistakes, but I will teach you how to catch them and how not to rely solely on spellchecker.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking for the past two years in a high school setting. I have helped others confront fears and deliver commencement speeches. Students learn the essentials of coming up with ideas, organizing thoughts, speaking them eloquently, memorizing strategies, and delivery techniques. Students still contact me to bounce their ideas for their "amplifications" off me.

Religion

I have taught the Catholic religion to middle and high school students, ranging as young as 6th graders to high school seniors. I have also taught RCIA on the college level and intend on pursuing doctoral studies in theology. Not only am I more than capable of tutoring any middle or high school religion class, but I also teach these subjects with passion and effectiveness.

SAT Math

I am a former geometry teacher, with strong performance on GRE math section. I could help not only with the difficult mathematical concepts but also with preparing for a standardized test in math.

SAT Writing

My GRE scores were in the 90th percentile in writing. I have also taught writing in the classroom (see my "writing" subject description). I can teach you how to prepare for and how to execute a masterfully crafted writing sample that will yield results that are appealing to the types of colleges you are interested in.

Spelling

Through my language studies (particularly Latin, Greek, and German) and knowledge of language development, I could take a morphological approach that focuses on word origins and roots. I guarantee you will improve your spelling.

Vocabulary

I can teach you how to expand your vocabulary rapidly through understanding some morphological principles of the English language and the languages from which it is derived.

Writing

I am a prolific writer, have taught writing in the classroom (7th grade, 12th grade, college freshmen and sophomores), and have tutored through Wyzant in this subject with strong results.

Superb!! A personal professor!

I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace in my second semester of Biblical Greek. After trying out two tutors, I decided to try the online approach. Kevin was a blessing sent from God! He was able to catch me up to the class PLUS teach me other important concepts that I had missed. I plan on using him again in the future to keep my Greek up to par, but more importantly, I would recommend
