About Laure

Dear Parents and Students:

Why should you choose me as a tutor?

First and foremost, I do care about each student that I help, young or older. Caring involves getting to know you the student and taking genuine interest in your difficulties with school work. After all, I was a student too and I did appreciate someone taking a sincere interest in my work.

I must add that I am very flexible and I can adapt my teaching and helping style to students of different ages. I have helped high school students, college students, and graduate students. Also, I have solid experience helping ADULT STUDENTS reach their educational goals: for example, pass their GED.

My specialty is teaching chemistry (general, organic, analytical, biochemistry). I can offer expertise and knowledge based on years of studies, but also practical support because I have worked as a professional scientist in the pharmaceutical & biotechnology industries. My main strategy is to ask you questions and teach you how to solve a problem by learning how to ask yourself key questions that take the problem apart that you achieve logical reasoning and obtain the final solution. I call that clear thinking. Showing how to research information is another important skill that I help students with as it is so essentially needed.

The other subject that I teach is French. I am French from France, and French is my first language; I am bilingual French/English. I teach pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, writing and comprehension with ease. Teaching a language is better one-on-one, but sometimes learning in a small group can be a lot of fun.

I also teach other subjects like general science, biology, algebra, ESL, test preparation too. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I welcome inquiries any time. If I feel I can't help you reach your goals, I will let you know immediately.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

This exam will test your aptitude for taking college courses and will give schools an idea of your educational development. Science questions on this test can be tricky. I can help with the content of the test, i.e. the actual science as well as the way a student answers a question by teaching test-taking strategies.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects in school. It was useful to me in college and in my chemistry classes. Algebra can be fun and entertaining. I can help you with your homework.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a traditional upper-level course taken by science majors (mainly chemistry and biology students). The focus of the course is large: protein chemistry, enzymology, molecular biology topics, carbohydrate chemistry, lipid chemistry, and some courses do include nucleic acid chemistry. The course is often divided into 2 parts: biophysics and protein chemistry and metabolism. The first part is more based on comprehension of concepts while the second part is often based on memorization of metabolic cycles like the Krebs cycle for example. I can help with both parts and my help will be tailored to your needs.

Biology

Biology covers many areas of knowledge. I am especially knowledgeable with anatomy/physiology, cell biology, microbiology, and genetics. My background in biochemistry helps tremendously because it is looking at biology from the molecular standpoint, increasing my understanding of how to teach biology and how to help someone with that subject.

Chemistry

This subject encompasses high school chemistry (basics such as understanding stoichiometry, balancing equations, performing simple calculations with the mol concept) and college general chemistry where more advanced topics are discussed, like solubility, acids and bases, electron configurations, etc... Help is tailored to the needs of the student.

French

French is widely spoken throughout the world: in France (of course), in Canada, Polynesia, certain countries in Africa, Haiti, and a few other islands near the Caribbeans. You need help for traveling or guidance for school work? I can help with speaking, writing, reading, and comprehension.

GED

I have passed a French high school diploma and I also passed a GED test in the US so that I could easily attend college in the US. I am knowledgeable in all areas of the GED test as I have a very broad educational background. My favorites are science, writing, reading, and algebra. I would be glad to help anyone attain the worthy goal of passing the GED test.

Organic Chemistry

I took 2 years of organic chemistry (1 year in college and 1 year in graduate school - physical organic chemistry and reaction mechanisms). I am familiar with the undergraduate curriculum and I have taught an advanced organic synthesis lab for one semester in graduate school. I believe that the key to success in organic chemistry is understanding reaction mechanisms, in other words how to "push" electrons, that is how electrons flow in a reaction to give the product. This way of thinking is useful for other advanced topics in chemistry in college and then graduate school. Organic is often taught as the student must cram or memorize tons of reactions, which is very difficult, hence the need to understand how electrons flow so that there is less memorization involved for the student. This is my strategy.

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra teaches necessary concepts and reasoning preparing the student for algebra. I can show clearly how to solve basic problems that will lead the student to be more confident for taking algebra.

Wonderful — Laure will explain a single thing in different ways until one understands the concept. I like this quality very much. We all learn in different ways and Laure understands that. And, as an older student, it is even a little harder to learn and she breaks it down and makes it easier. ...
