About Carmine

Hello! My name is Carmine, and I love to teach Math and several other subjects.

I love one-on-one work with students, particularly teaching "from the student's perspective". I meet students at their level and enable them to build up their foundations. My goal is immediate improvement and long-term retention.

Study skills (such as prioritizing, note-taking, and handwriting) are part of the tools I can provide.

I provide both in-person tutoring (within a given distance) and online tutoring.

-- Credentials and Qualifications

My excellent SAT score earned me a full scholarship at FIU and several other universities. I chose FIU for family reasons, and I worked as a Teaching Assistant with the Math Department, focusing on College Algebra and Calculus. I earned A in all my undergraduate math classes and graduated in Computer Engineering "cum laude".

FIU offered me a position as a Computer Science researcher and a fully paid-for PhD. When I realized that my talent is to be a teacher, I graduated with a Masters (and 60 graduate credits under my belt alongside several years of collaboration with engineering corporations).

In order to obtain the professional teaching certification, I am enrolled in the EPI program of Broward College and I obtained Letters of Eligibility from the Florida Dept. of Education in Mathematics (6-12), Computer Science (K-12), and Technology Education (6-12).

I was hired as a math teacher at a center for at-risk youth. I worked there for a short while, overseeing classes of 10-16 students from 6th to 12th grade, lecturing and guiding them in individual work and teamwork. I also developed learning plans for the new middle school and high school textbooks.

I am currently considering several teaching positions in public and private schools in Broward and Miami-Dade. I want to be a teacher in a school where I can make a difference. This is also the reason why I chose to tutor and I maintain a relatively low hourly rate despite of my skills and credentials.

-- More Details

I love to study, as I am in a process of life-long learning. At some point I found out that I love to teach. One of my talents is connecting the right dots. My reasoning is circular and my notes and explanations are sequential. I am also very visual-oriented. Thus I am able to provide concise, effective notes and more in-depth explanations when needed.

My engineering degree helps me connect the theoretical concepts to real-life applications and phenomena. My computer science degree helps me express concepts step by step and generalize explanations so that they will work for as many examples as possible.

Regarding study skills: I taught myself the math required to pass the SAT, and the high score earned me scholarships at several universities. Having studied in three different countries, both in public and private schools, I developed my own method for taking notes, reading textbooks, and finding the "path of least resistance" when solving problems. I also learned how to motivate myself to strive for learning (long-term memory retention) rather than just understanding (short-term memory retention).

Regarding languages: I was born in Cuba and raised in Italy, so I speak English, Italian, and Spanish fluently. My knowledge of the Italian and Latin American cultures and traditions helps me enrich the lessons with real-life examples.

-- Why Me?

Because I have tried it on myself first, and it worked.

Because I have helped students from 6th grade through college to be academically successful.

Because I am knowledgeable and disciplined but also fun and flexible.

-- Contact Me :)

I can provide references upon request. If you think I am qualified to help you, please touch base with me and let's find the best way to work together. I want to set you up for success.

-- Special rates

Despite my skills and qualifications, I keep my tutoring rate relatively low: $30/hour (of which I receive $18). My reason behind tutoring is wanting to make a difference in the life of students.

That being said, I can be flexible on certain circumstances. For instance, I can provide discounts when setting up a number of lessons, since certain subjects cannot be learned in two or three hours, but require weekly or even twice-a-week sessions. I am also very accommodating if you are new in this country, or if you need material assistance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Engineering

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Engineering cum laude. I graduated at FIU through the Honors College.

Handwriting

I have been taught handwriting in block letters and cursive since a very young age. In my monastic life, penmanship is a skill we practice daily.

Microsoft Windows

I have familiarized with Microsoft Windows since first grade. I began to study my first booklets in second grade. I have always worked on this OS and I studied Advanced Windows Programming in my undergraduate degree in computer engineering. I have made extensive use of Windows pursuing my computer science graduate degree.

Study Skills

I have studied in public and private schools in three different countries. I have also been homeschooled, completing third and fourth grade in one year. My education ranges from the humanities to science to mathematics to theology. I published my first book on the history of mathematics and computing while in 12th grade. Having moved to the US from Italy, I spent one year studying for the SAT and I scored over 90% percentile and was allowed to skip College Algebra. I taught myself Calculus in 6 months. I achieved As in all my undergraduate math courses. As a sophomore I presented an independent research at a conference for seniors, which later won several awards. I was a computer science researcher in college for 6 years. I graduated in Computer Engineering cum laude and earned 60 graduate credits in Computer Science, graduating with a Master's only in order to begin my teaching career. I have excellent note-taking and reading skills. I know how to prepare flash cards and mind maps. I know how to manage time, sleep, nutrition, how to prioritize, how to multi-task.

Very Patient and Knowledgeable

Met with Carmine to go over my college algebra test review. He was very thorough and helpful, even had some tricks to remember the material. I will use his services in the future if I need them. Two thumbs up!
