About Frances

Hi, I'm Frances! My Bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education, I have a Master's degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Technology, and I'm ESOL certified. As a Florida State Certified and Montessori Certified teacher with over 16 years combined experience in both, I'm excited to provide a unique learning experience by assisting students from Pre-K through Grade 5 gain a thorough understanding of academic concepts, increase concentration and improve their organizational and study skills by incorporating both Montessori and traditional methods in every lesson.

With the experience I've gained in both traditional and Montessori methods of education, I have to admit, once I was introduced and experienced the impact Montessori has on learning, I was hooked! In a nutshell, the Montessori approach is a hands-on method, that follows the individual child's needs and interests creating a specific learning experience which builds a child's confidence and love of learning. It seamlessly takes the child on a learning journey from the concrete (hands on) to the abstract (pencil & paper) in all subject areas. As a Montessori teacher, I have witnessed first grade students begin the school year adding simple math equations using concrete/hands on materials and end the year knowing how to divide, as well as subtract and multiply abstractly! Because I strongly believe in the Montessori method, I have a substantial array of Montessori materials available to assist your child gain confidence in his/her ability and exceed their academic potential.

As a math tutor, I highly regard the hands-on Montessori materials I incorporate in each lesson. Learning from the concrete to the abstract provides students the advantage of seeing and feeling math which enables them to absorb and comprehend math concepts naturally. As Dr. Maria Montessori so eloquently stated, " The human hand allows the mind to reveal itself".

Over my 16 year career in elementary education, I have participated in and implemented numerous literacy concepts, and have a plethora of strategies and materials (both traditional and Montessori) to assist readers and writers on all levels.

I look forward to guiding your child overcome academic hurdles by utilizing hands-on materials to engage his/her learning while simultaneously sparking their imagination and reigniting their desire to learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education (age 3 - grade 3), a Master's degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Technology and a Montessori Credential for grades 1-3. I have 16 years experience in the classroom and have implemented developmentally appropriate, hands on lessons in all general subject areas targeting each student's individual learning style throughout my career.

ESL/ESOL

I am a Florida Certified Elementary teacher with ESOL endorsement as well as a Montessori teacher. I incorporate a variety of hands-on materials and activities in all subject areas to make learning not only fun, but make it memorable so that students absorb and retain what they learn.

Handwriting

Over the course of my 16 year career in Early Childhood and Elementary Education I have implemented many strategies in helping children write legibly in both manuscript and cursive writing. I have had success in incorporating sandpaper letters, pudding, shaving cream, sand and even a Budda Board to name a few. These strategies not only make writing fun, but they take the fear out of writing. I also use pencil grips and fine motor activities to strengthen fine motor coordination.

Homeschool

With 16 years combined experience in elementary education and Montessori education I provide specific developmentally appropriate lessons to both individuals and small groups to target their academic goals.

Phonics

With 16 years of combined traditional Elementary and Montessori education experience, I provide developmentally appropriate phonics lessons using concrete materials to target each student's specific academic needs. I have implemented many strategies in helping children recognize letters and their corresponding sounds as well as help develop solid reading fluency. Language Works is a favorite among my students each year. It not only enables students to read words, but builds their vocabulary skills and most importantly confidence.

Study Skills

Over the course of my 16 year career in Traditional Elementary and Montessori Education I have implemented many strategies in helping children organize their time to get the most out of learning. Because I strongly believe students should be involved in what and how they learn, I confer with each student and together we design an outline that suits their learning style. Aside from discussing what their favorite and least favorite subjects are, we consider the best placement in class to foster concentration for those students who are distracted easily. We also collaborate on an agreed amount of time to complete each assignment and provide timers if necessary. In my Montessori class, I developed an individual "work plan" that lists all areas of the curriculum that each student should cover throughout the course of the day. Each student has the freedom to begin the day in their preferred subject area with the understanding that they are accountable for meeting the daily expectation they helped plan. Each student is given a binder that is divided by subject which contains all of the essentials for staying organized and focused (paper, folders, worksheets, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue stick etc). Once the student is finished with a specific assignment, it is checked for accuracy and neatness. I then initial the work plan and the student moves on to the next assignment. This system not only provides the student with a sense of order and concentration, but it gives them intrinsic rewards when their work is checked off as well as a sense of pride.

Great Tutoring session!!

Frances came to my home to tutor my son in math. He really enjoyed his session with her which was very important to me as I want him to look forward to his sessions and continue in his love for learning. Frances brought several manipulative's with her which really helped my son understand the concepts. We have scheduled another session with her.
