About Susan

I am a psychotherapist, an adjunct college professor, and a teacher. I enjoy working with students of all ages, and I have taught at all grade levels, from elementary education to high school. As a teacher, I often found myself wanting to work more one-on-one with students, and tutoring was the perfect way for me to give my students that individual attention. I excelled in English when I was in school. Reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, etc. have always been my strengths. I have often been hired to do professional writing for people who either do not have the time or the skill to do so themselves.

As a therapist, I understand the frustration and discouragement that accompanies not doing well in a certain area or subject. No one can excel at everything. We all have something that challenges us so much that we find we need extra help. Whether it is through therapy or teaching, I am dedicated to helping students feel successful. I have been told that I have a fun and interesting approach, incorporating things that students can relate to in order to help them learn. I hope that my students come to enjoy learning, and that they feel confident about their ability to do so.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Throughout my years of teaching, I have specialized mostly in English and related subjects. Now that I am tutoring, my students are mostly those who need help with English, grammar, writing, reading comprehension, etc. I believe that these basic subjects are the building blocks to all others. When students improve their skills in English, etc., they can improve their work in most other subjects as well.

Grammar

As a teacher, I have corrected hundreds of essays and papers. When students make too many grammatical mistakes, those mistakes detract from the content of their essays and often lead to lower grades. I have helped many students improve their grammar, thereby improving their writing and their grades. I enjoy this subject as well, and I try to make it interesting for students.

Handwriting

Good handwriting continues to be an important skill to possess, even in this world of advanced technology. Clear, legible handwriting makes a good impression; sloppy, illegible handwriting not only makes a bad impression, it can also lead to misunderstandings and crucial mistakes.

I am a natural born teacher and therapist. I have over 20 years of experience tutoring students, both during and after my years as a therapist. I have tutored many different subjects, one of them being Handwriting.

Teaching a student to write, or helping a student to improve their handwriting begins with attention to good posture and the correct way to hold a pencil. The worksheets are essential to learning and practicing proper letter formation including size, slant, and spacing for both printing and cursive writing.

I have often helped students to improve their handwriting skills even while teaching them other subjects. For example, if a student turns in an English paper and the handwriting is sloppy, they may get a lower grade on that paper due to their handwriting. Many teachers consider handwriting when grading schoolwork, regardless the subject.

Besides, as I explain to my students, "How is anyone going to know how brilliant your ideas are if they can't read them?"

Proofreading

Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar are among the most essential skills anyone can possess. Learning how to proofread one's writing increases the chances that any mistakes in these areas will be caught and corrected.

I have been a tutor for over 20 years. I find that in nearly every subject I teach, there is a need to talk to students about proofreading their work. Whether it is English, Math, or any other subject, I impress upon students the importance of finding and correcting their mistakes.

There are strategies for proofreading that can be taught. There is a process that makes sense. There are ways to show students how proofreading leads to good writing skills. I have many years of experience myself proofreading college dissertations and professional articles. I enjoy helping students improve their writing as nothing gives them more of an edge in school and in life.

Reading

I have tutored students in quite a few subjects, but regardless of the subject, I have discovered one commonality. Poor reading skills were often responsible for poor grades. If students do not fully understand what they are reading, they are not going to be able to follow the lesson or answer questions correctly. I have helped many students to improve their reading comprehension, thereby improving their understanding of the subject matter. They are often better writers as well, once they become better readers.

Spelling

Poor spelling can ruin anything you write, regardless how good your ideas and content.

I have been a tutor for many years, and no matter what subject I may be teaching, I often find myself talking to students about their spelling mistakes. I always try to impress upon students the importance of correct spelling.

I have taught the basic rules of spelling, and also the exceptions. I like to get students comfortable with using a dictionary if they are not sure. Poor spelling not only makes a poor impression .... it might be linked to mispronunciation, as well.

Writing

Good writing skills are often the basis for doing well in school, excelling in a job, and making a good impression throughout one's life. I have taught writing skills to students of all ages, including adults who realize that they will get further in their careers if they write well. Writing has always been one of my strengths, and it is a pleasure to be able to teach it to others.
