About Naida

I am a secondary school teacher with thirteen years of experience teaching English and Reading at the 6th through 12th grade levels. I also taught reading in an adult education setting for two years and have tutored numerous students at elementary through high school levels.

A teacher should create an environment that is conducive to building analytical and critical thinking skills, boost students’ confidence in their own talents and strengths while instructing them in strategies that will enhance and build their academic skills. A dedicated educator must also concern themselves with creating lessons that are challenging and relevant in order to ensure that students have every opportunity to develop into responsible, contributing members of their communities.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

Grammar is defined as the study of the way sentences of a language are constructed. The study of grammatical structures therefore helps a student to develop a better understanding and command of the language. Improving proficiency in grammar, usage, and mechanics is essential to becoming an efficient writer and being able to express oneself in both written and oral formats.

The basis of grammar instruction begins with the eight parts of speech: (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections). Knowledge of the parts of speech is an important component of being able to communicate in both written and oral form. Lessons on usage and mechanics include identifying and correcting fragments and run-on sentences, which directly affects writing.

Basic sentences parts and patterns are also an integral part of grammar instruction. In order to become proficient writers, students need to understand and master the art of constructing sentences with a sound knowledge of subjects, predicates, direct & indirect objects, varying types of phrases, and many other sub categories of the parts of speech.

Grammar instruction is the basis for moving a student into the writing arena and helping them to progress academically in the area of Language Arts.

Reading

The main core of this subject area, which is improving comprehension & fluency, arms students with strategies to assist them in improving and enhancing their reading skills. This content will overlap with some of the vocabulary strategies. For example, context clue activities are stressed to build reading comprehension. Students will be coached on before (previewing a book or passage), during (questioning, making inferences), and after (drawing conclusions) reading strategies to demonstrate how they can improve their understanding of any subject matter. Fluent reading is modeled for the student and guided oral reading instruction is practiced and assessed for accuracy, rate (speed), and prosody (reading with expression and feeling).

Study Skills

During my teaching career, I attended multiple professional development seminars for CRISS (Creating Independence through Student owned Strategies), Reading Comprehension across the Curriculum, Vocabulary Development, and Time Management. All of these learned or enhanced strategies were implemented in the classroom with positive results. I also taught Study Skills during a summer enrichment program for incoming ninth- graders for several years. In addition, I worked with a tutoring service that required training and certification in the area of study skills.

Study skills provide students with strategies to facilitate and enhance learning. After working with a student to identify his/her learning style and academic standing, we will then work together to create a plan for success.
Time management is a key aspect for academic success. A student’s agenda/planner is an absolute necessity to assist in mapping out a schedule for managing daily life. The school and home timetables play an important role in visualizing the daily schedule and creating a working plan that includes time for homework and studying, as well as the availability for spending special occasions with family and friends, or pursuing personal interests.
Teaching a student how the use of flash cards, graphic organizers, vocabulary maps, two-column notes, context clues, and other strategies that can be utilized across the academic curriculum to enhance learning is a significant tool that also transfers into lifelong skills. Utilizing these strategies for building vocabulary, reading comprehension and retention enhances the learning process and furthermore, builds a student’s confidence.

Vocabulary

Skills and strategies to build vocabulary and reading comprehension are the focus of this subject area. Lessons on context clues such as: prefixes, suffixes, roots, synonyms, antonyms, homophones and idioms are practiced until mastered. Concrete knowledge of these skills are necessary to assist students with decoding unfamiliar words in any given text. In addition, I also concentrate on teaching students how to effectively use contextual clues in surrounding sentences to decipher the meaning of new vocabulary words and thereby improve and enhance their comprehension skills.
Vocabulary Mapping Cards and Logs are utilized to enhance retention and ownership of new vocabulary.

Writing

Many students find writing to be a chore but proficiency in writing is an absolutely necessary skill that all students must master in order to enter arenas of higher learning. The skills taught in this subject area will assist with improving writing skills. Strategies to improve sentence structure, compose effective paragraphs, and essays are taught, practiced and mastered. Grammar instruction, proofreading skills, and the five step writing process are important components as are the use of dictionaries and thesauruses. Guided timed writing and paragraph/essay development is taught with the intent of helping students to become confident and proficient writers.
