Born with a love of teaching, I taught my friends to ride a bike and play the piano; playing school was my favorite pastime. My greatest strength is the ability to empathize and get to know my students quickly. I like to start with understanding their learning style to develop plan and lessons to meet individual needs and abilities. As a special education educator, my experience includes teaching the gifted to the challenged learner from kindergarten through adulthood.
My preference is teaching in small groups or one on one. This allows less distraction and therefore more learning. The entire well-being of each student is taken into account to develop a professional relationship that enhances learning for a life time. A high percentage of achievement in my students has proven my success as a tutor and educator in a variety of settings.

With over 20 years teaching experience, a Master's degree and permanent teaching certification, I am a highly qualified educator. While serving as an Americorps volunteer, I tutored K-3rd graders in reading skills. Using motivational srategies, multi-sensory and precision teaching applications, 96% of my students had increased sight letter/word recognition fluency and comprehension.
As an AmeriCorps volunteer, my assignment was to teach reading to those who were experiencing difficulty keeping up with the core curriculum. I saw an increase in reading skills in all of my students. My background in special needs helps me to teach using a variety of strategies for individual success and optimal learning.
My teaching certification is in Special Education. Most of my teaching experience was in a small classroom environment. The students had IEP's (individual educational plans) and were taught according to their needs and abilities. Many became highly successful under my guidance and direction.
During the summer before entering college, I took a course in Study Skills; it was very helpful towards my success. I have taught several courses in study skills. The lessons included finding their dominate learning style, strategies that worked for home, school and work, how to locate information from a variety of sources, and comprehension of the materials to name a few.
