About Kristi

Hello parents and students. I am an English/Psychology major from Stanford University and a published author (non-fiction/Random House). I also have my Master's in Social Work from Boston College. I am interested in tutoring elementary students in all subjects but my specialty is reading. I love helping students work on phonics, comprehension, and fluency. In addition to tutoring through Wyzant I was also a tutor for the federal SES program for two years. I really enjoyed it and my students always tested significantly higher at post-test over pre-test.

I am extremely committed to every child with whom I work. I tailor a program for each student and I found that in many cases, difficulties in reading and comprehension were undermining the student's self esteem and performance in every area. I am a big believer that every student is capable and extraordinary and I will help them find that in themselves and demonstrate it in their studies.

I have worked professionally as a case manager in social services, a counselor, a writer, and a substitute teacher. I am also a mother of four children; my oldest daughter is autistic and I am very familiar and supportive of students with disabilities. I have seen first hand how a disability perceived through one lens can actually be a strength when perceived through another. I also homeschooled my youngest son for a period of time when the school system could not meet his needs. He is now graduating from high school and scored a perfect score in English and a near perfect score in Math on the SAT.

Because I now have my autistic daughter home with me, I will now only be tutoring in my home here in High Springs or online. I am willing to discuss picking up your child from school if that would be of assistance. I do not feel an elementary student can benefit fully from online tutoring but I do find it an excellent method to assist older students with papers, etc. Please consider allowing me to assist your child to gain the skills and confidence to be a successful, confident, and happy student. Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in social work. I worked as a tutor for the federal SES program for 2 years working with students from Kindergarten through 10th grade in Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics. My students improved dramatically as I always supplemented the standard common core curriculum with additional practice and examples of the materials. I believe wholeheartedly in the capacity of every student to learn and excel, and I take responsibility for finding the method by which a student learns best. I am particularly interested in ensuring student proficiency in reading, including phonics, fluency, and comprehension as these are the cornerstones of successful lifelong learning.

Special Needs

I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Stanford University and an MSW in Social Work. I worked with ADD/ADHD, Asperers, Autism, and Dyslexic students as a counselor. I also tutored students with these "disabilities" while working in the SES tutoring program. Additionally, I have extensive experience working with my own severely autistic daughter and ADD/ADHD son. I also completed a course out of the University of London focused on assisting children with learning challenges, particularly dyslexia, to improve their reading and related skills. I understand the difficulties these students can face with organization, short term memory, visual anomalies, attention issues, auditory processing deficits, decoding, comprehension, behavior, and maybe most importantly, self esteem. I also appreciate the many gifts that often accompany these deficits, primarily strengths in spatial thinking and creativity.
