Hi! I love kids and have had great success with my students, whether they be special needs or regular Ed. I have developed many strategies to help children learn. I am certified for Early Childhood and K - 12, special needs, but that translates into being able to teach children K - 5 in regular Ed. and help them learn. Having had worked with mentally challenged children, I have had to develop ways to teach through different modalities. Some children learn best visually, others in other ways. Also, learning needs to be fun for children.
English grammar, writing skills and reading are the basis of all other subjects. I have taught many children to read and write. I have used Handwriting Without Tears program.
Having worked with young children aged 3 and up, I have developed many strategies to teach phonics. Children first need a good awareness of what phonics is before actually learning to decode words using their phonics skills.
I have taught my grandchildren study skills, as well as tutored other children in spelling and study skills for the past 30 years. Techniques, such as association are used for spelling.
I usually have an immediate positive connection with children. If they like their tutor and tutoring is not drudgery, learning will happen. I can help your child and make our time together, not only productive, but fun. Let's learn and raise those grades together! When children do well, they feel good about themselves and self esteem is so important. Hi! I love kids and have had great success with my students, whether they be special needs or regular Ed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with many children who have been diagnosed as ADD/ADHD, many on medication. These children have difficulty sitting still and focusing. We work on where we are doing schoolwork physically. They need low stimulation. Then, we work on organizational skills and techniques, using breaks. I have children help make a plan for doing schoolwork.
I have worked with children on many areas on the Autism spectrum, including Aspergers. A rapport must be established with the child so he/she feels comfortable with you. Social skills techniques are a good way to help Asperger children understand and learn. I use a lot of pictures of real objects (and real items) with all children with Autism.
I have a Master's in Early Childhood Special Education from George Washington University. Much emphasis was placed on phonics as phonological awareness and phonics need to be understood by children before they can learn to read. I have had great success with pre K children, as well as children in Kindergarten and 1st grade. I have developed strategies that work well.
Teaching study skills is teaching organizational skills. Many children who are ADD or ADHD need better study skills as they lack the ability to focus. I use checklists, simple organizational techniques and time management skills to help children who need help with study skills. I ask the kids to help with the planning and hold them accountable with a plan they help create. When children are involved, they are more successful.
