About Marilyn

I am a native of Jacksonville Florida for forty-five years. I am a mother of two sons and a grandmother of five. Growing up as a child, I desired to help others by teaching them how to improve themselves. Once I became a parent, raising my sons to be successful was my priority.

I knew that this would require them to have the best education possible; which motivated me to become a teacher. I wanted to provide them with a well-balanced learning experience from a real world perspective. In an effort to demonstrate the importance of education, I went back to school to complete my Bachelor degree in Elementary Education at the University of North Florida.

I went on to Full Sail University to obtain my Masters in Education Media Design and Technology to ensure the successful development of every student I meet. I am currently pursuing higher education in Management Leadership, for my own personal development and to continue helping others to be successful.

It is rewarding to know that a student understands what you are teaching and excited to learn. I have worked in the Duval County School System for nine years and have taught in the private school setting for eight years. I currently live in Ft. Lauderdale taking care of my mother. I like to dabble in the arts in my spare time (which is very limited now). My hobbies are acting, dancing, and filming. I began performing for audiences at a young age at family reunions and birthday parties. I attended several workshops to enhance my artistic abilities. My dream is to one day appear in a Broadway stage play.

My unique way of communicating with others without words and learning to speak another language is interesting and exciting. Please contacted me to learn about other skills that I may assist you with. I am looking forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have greater than seventeen years experience as an educator, using a variety of educational technologies. I have a BA in Elementary Education and MS in Educational Media Design and Technologies. I have over ten years teaching in both private and public schools of children of all grade level and ages. I possess leadership and organizational skills as Principal successfully for five years building and motivating dynamic teams.

English

My 15 years of experience as an elementary teacher and six-grade middle school Language Arts/Reading teacher has given me the innovativeness to help students learn how to speak well and express themselves properly. Also as a Doctoral learner, I have developed my Language skills on a higher academic level.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am a graduate with a master in Educational Media Design and Technology. As a previous owner of Revelation Videography and Technology, I have developed skills in presentation by using PowerPoint, Keynote, Photoshop, and other design applications. My understanding of design standards, layout, color, and typography gives me the ability to develop, graphically engaging, concise, and interactive presentations.

Public Speaking

My qualification as a public speaker has developed over the years as a teacher, trainer, and presenter. I started developing my public speaking in my first year of college by taking a course to overcome my fear of speaking in public. My experience as a Toastmaster representative for a past employer, I was empowered to become more effective in communicating with peers and leaders. As a performer of the arts, I performed before numerous audiences.

Reading

I led a class of 22 six graders of low functioning, that resulted in 47% increase in overall standardized test scores in reading over the course of the school year. Also, my first year of entering college, I was exempted from the reading portion because my reading scores were high.

Theatre

I am a lover of the arts, especially dance and drama. I studied acting under Mr. Noble Lee Lester at Edward Water College. My exposure to acting began at a young age. I have premiered in community and church plays such as “How Cold Is Your Ice”, “A Salute to James Weldon Johnson”, “Colored Girls”, “The King’s Family Reunion”, “Majigen”, “A Black Nativity”, “Frat House”, “Reality Check”, and “Apostacy:360 degrees. I premiered as a dancer in the gospel play “The Prophecy,” “A Love Story,” and “A Frustrated Christian.”

I began performing for audiences at family reunions and birthday parties. I studied dance under One Way Gospel Dance Theatre, Northside Center for the Arts, Freedom School of Dance, and Florida Community College at Jacksonville. However, dance is just one of my many talents. I have directed many children plays and recitals. I also studied voice under the direction of Luke Shumpert.

I have attended several workshops to enhance my artistic abilities. In 1999 I attended a dance workshop in New York were she learned how to incorporate different types of props and costuming into dance. I also attended an African dance workshop at the Ritz (Jacksonville, FL). In the summer of 98, I held a youth dance camp. In the year of 2000, I won the 2nd place in the teacher’s talent show for an original monologue. In 2001, I won 1st place in the talent show performing a monologue and dance.
