I am a Certified Teacher in Various Exceptional, K-6, Reading and ESOL Endorsements and currently a teacher in Hillsborugh County.
For 6 years I taught Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, Science and Social Skills for ESE Middle/High School students at an ESE Center and the last 2 years I taught Reading, Math, Writing and Social Skills ESE/Resource Elementary students. Many of my students have various learning disabilities ranging from ADHA, Autism to Emotional Behavior.
What makes me an effective teacher for my ESE students, these are the students most teachers do not want in their classrooms. ESE teachers are like the king of the Island of Misfits, the ESE students are still good but different, we just need to help them realize how wonderful they are by making a difference and helping them contributing to society I have always believed in treating people the way I want to be treated. I think good listening, honesty, manners, and respect have made me an effective teacher. I try to understand what the student is thinking, including their goals and worries. If you are not sure, ask. They will feel valued and more likely to trust you. Don’t demand everything. Small incremental steps build trust. Try something, reassess or reflect and then continue one step at a time. When you are listening and being respectful the student will start listening back. Demonstrate good manners, no matter what students ever say to me I always say “thank you” and “please,” many times this has confused them but it has always helped me diffuse a situation.
I believe all children can learn and be successful in school,we need to give them the opportunity to work and share their understanding of their learning strategies. As Educators we need to see how they are thinking and where their understanding are at and plan for what direction will provide them the assistance they need. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
