About Carole

I am a retired Seminole County school teacher. I am certified in Kindergarten through 6th grade, and am also certified to teach Special Education, ESOL and Reading. I have a Masters degree from the University of Central Florida and a Specialist degree from NOVA Southeastern University.

For years, I have worked with students who struggle to learn the basics of reading. I taught at a school that serves low ability students. I have been both a classroom teacher and a reading interventionist. Over the years, I have learned how to assess a child's reading weaknesses and how to apply strategies to help a child learn to read by overcoming his or her weaknesses. Even though I have retired from the Seminole County public school system, I still want to help those students who struggle so hard and yet often feel defeated and frustrated. No students should ever feel that way. I strongly believe that every child can learn, even though some children learn differently and with much difficulty, they can still learn.

While a teacher, I tutored in an after school reading and math tutoring program held at my school.

At the moment, I volunteer at a local elementary school where I do my best to help and encourage the students learn reading and math.

I have raised four children and I am working on helping raise two grandchildren. Raising my children included helping them with their homework and schoolwork. Therefore,I can understand a parent's frustration and desire to help their children do well with their schoolwork.

I an involved with the Pinellas County School system and drive to St. Petersburg from time to time to help the students there.

If you have a child who is struggling with reading, or other school topics, I would be happy to meet with him or her at a place that is convenient for you. I look forward to helping your student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6 elementary ed teacher (Seminole County School District, Florida). I have taught reading and second grade for several years and just recently retired. I am also a certified special ed. teacher who is also certified in ESOL and Reading. Additionally, I have tutored with ASP,(After School programs)Inc. in their after school tutorial program.

Phonics

I worked as a reading interventionist for six years. I taught the Success For All reading curriculum. The primary portion of this curriculum is phonics based. I also taught the phonics portion of a reading course at Seminole State College for two years. I have administered the PASI, the DAR, the DIBBELS and other phonics assessments to students.

Sewing

My grandmother was a professional seamstress. She taught me how to sew when I was a child. Over the years, I have sewn clothing for myself and my children. I have made curtains, couch covers, and pillows for my homes.

I can read a sewing pattern. I know what selvage is. I know how to mark a pattern and how to place it on the straight of the fabric. I know what a dart is. I can repair tears in fabric, change out zippers, sew hems, make buttonholes, gather, make casings. I can use a sewing machine and I can do hand stitching. I know that the usual seam allowance is 5/8 of an inch.

Ms. Carole is super awesome!

My 8 year old son looks forward to the days she comes. She is an awesome very laid back, patient teacher. I, as his mother, see a difference also.
