Hello, my name is Kayla and I'm an Industrial and Systems Engineering Student at the University of Florida. I graduated from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB) at Palm Harbor University High School in 2016 (higher level, Chemistry, History, and English standard level, Math (methods), Spanish, and Psychology). I enjoy spending my time running, hiking, going to football games, and doing calculus homework. I am driven to be successful and to help those around me succeed as well.

I am currently certified in Elementary Mathematics, Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Geometry and American History. I have experience and have been successful in tutoring a student in geometry and algebra. I have also earned A's in the math classes I have taken. Even though I am not currently taking all of these classes I apply concepts such as Elementary math, Algebra, and Geometry every day in my current coursework. I am currently taking Calculus II at the UF. I am passionate about American History and took several in-depth American History classes. In high school, I took Higher Level IB history, focused on History of the Americas and passed the final IB Higher Level history exam. I also read recreationally in American History because it is an interest of mine.

My experience with tutoring is fairly limited. I have tutored a student one on one in Chemistry and Geometry, I have also spent time helping students with Chemistry in an after school group setting. Even though I do not have much formal tutoring experience, I have had lots of experience helping peers in class work through difficult problems. This experience showed me the value of using leading questions to help someone solve a problem rather than telling them how to do it. I have found that I can be most effective as a tutor when I can tie the subject back to something important to the student. For example, when explaining dilutions to a student who played soccer I explained it in terms of mixing water and Gatorade powder. Understanding the basic concepts of any subject become easier when they are applied to that student's world. My philosophy on tutoring is that my job as a tutor is to find the breakdown in understanding and then help the student make and reinforce that connection until he/she is confident in their ability.

I am excited to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at any time and I will get back to you within 24 hours. I am eager to help you learn!

Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have been taking and being successful in math courses that have required these skills at the high school and collegiate level. I have experience tutoring a student in geometry which required going over elementary math concepts. As an engineering major, I use elementary math concepts in the majority of my classes every day.

History

American History

American History

I have taken two years of American History at the high school honors level and earned an A. Additionally, I passed the higher level IB History of Americas exam which placed an emphasis on American History. History is one of my personal passions and so I do a lot of recreational reading about American History.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I earned an A when I took Algebra 1. I have also taken math courses after Algebra 1 that have included Algebra principles, including pre-calculus, calculus 1 and 2. A skill that makes Algebra 1 different and more difficult from other math courses is the need to turn words into equations. My experience with higher-level math and science courses this skill is something I have a lot of practice with. I think the best strategy for learning Algebra 1 is doing lots of practice problems until the student is comfortable tackling problems by themselves.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have earned As in Calculus 1,2, and 3 at UF. I also have experience with differential equations which gives me a broader background from which to teach Calculus.
Geometry,

Geometry

I tutored a high school student in geometry for approximately 6 months. He saw a real increase in his grades. As his tutor, I saw a real improvement in his confidence in geometry and in his problem solving abilities.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I earned an A in Prealgebra when I took it originally. I have also continued to progress through higher level math courses successfully applying prealgebra concepts. I have prior experience tutoring a middle school student in prealgebra. I learned that it was important to identify specifically what part of a problem the student does not understand and then fix that specific problem rather instead of trying to explain every part of every problem.

Kayla was very patent and knowledgeable. My son felt much more confident after an hour of tutoring with her, then the entire school year with his teacher. We are setting up another appointment and will continue to use her in the future, she was great...
