PhD in Mathematical Physics

Andrew R.
I have a BS in physics from Polytechnic Institute of New York and a PhD in mathematical physics from the University of Florida. I also have enough credits all together for a BS in math and did 18 graduate credits of course work in math at UF.

I've done math and physics tutoring on and off during school and have been tutoring for the last 4 years (including a lot of online tutoring).

I've taught general physics both with and without calculus (PHY2048, 2049, etc. in Florida). To...

Calculus,
#### Calculus

I take a conceptual/intuitive approach to calc, not overly formal, and like
to reduce formal definitions to their intuitive content and make frequent
use of pictures in illustrating concepts. I've studied such advanced topics as
functional analysis, Galois theory and path integrals.

Physics,
#### Physics

I emphasize concepts and comprehension, so if you're not interested in the material and just want answers to problems, you should probably look elsewhere. Problem solving and conceptual understanding are complimentary; the more you understand the better you can solve the problems.
I also emphasize the geometric picture of vector operations; this can help you choose the 'correct' coordinate system for resolving vectors (for a mechanics problem) and understand things like why the acceleration points inward in uniform circular motion, etc.

## Good teacher

Helped me understand the information that was needed to begin my homework and also helped me start my homework. I have a better understanding of physics.

## knowledgeable and helpful tutor.

Andrew and I went over kinematics equations. I liked that it was easy to follow, and he made the formulas clear. We went over problems that looked easy on paper, but I was happy for him to help me walk through them because they were not as easy as they looked.

## Excellent Tutor

Really has a grasp on various physics topics and can explain them to you in a way that is easily understood! Some of the topics we reviewed were Fluid Pressures, Bernoulli's Equations, kinematics, and some gravity based problems.

## Great Teacher, Calculus

My son is working with Andrews to complete his college calculus homework. He is knowledgeable and patient teacher. He is flexible and my son is very happy. He will continue to work with him this semester and probably next semester.
