About Caroline

I am currently an adjunct professor in the Writing Program at the University of Florida and have been teaching since 2012. I received my BA ('11) and MA ('15) in Religion from the University of Florida and have tutored in multiple subjects including writing, social sciences, humanities, ESL, and foreign languages since 2004. My teaching philosophy has always been student-centered. I believe it's my responsibility as a tutor to encourage students first to recognize and appreciate their strengths, in order then to address areas of improvement. It's my joy and privilege to serve a role in helping students develop the confidence and skills to take ownership of their education. My CV is also available upon request.

In addition to my academic credentials, many of my personal interests have also come to influence my tutoring style. My passion for creativity through writing, art-making, and dance have led me to develop a tutoring method that allows students to learn through self-expression. I'm also a big believer in mindfulness and self-care, with meditation and yoga being important parts of my everyday routine. The insight, clarity, and inner peace I have cultivated through these practices has now found its way into my tutoring sessions, where I hope to create a safe, encouraging space for students to become more aware of themselves, their abilities, and their potential for success.

My two major areas of tutoring expertise are in writing and social studies. For over a decade, my lifelong passion for writing and English has inspired me to help others develop their voices and communication skills. Since 2004, I've served as a peer tutor for high school and college-level writing, and since 2014, I have been teaching writing classes at the University of Florida, including ENC 1101 and 1102 as well as technical and professional communication. Based on my experiences as a tutor and in the classroom, it's become my goal to create a supportive space for students to address their concerns and rediscover writing as an empowering form of self-expression that everyone can master with enough practice and dedication.

Finally, social science continues to be an incredibly important subject in my life. It was a critical part of my academic career in which I studied world history and religions, but focused primarily on religion and culture in the United States. I am most interested in the connections that exist across US and international political history, religion, women's studies, race relations, multiculturalism, immigration, and the history of mental health and social work. My goal is to show students how understanding history and social sciences can transform their lives, no matter what their future holds. Knowing where you've come from is the first step on your path forward!

Thank you for visiting my profile! Please get in touch with me if you would like to schedule a lesson. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Religion

Hi, I'm excited about the opportunity to tutor in religion. I received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Religion from the University of Florida and have been researching and tutoring in this subject since 2009. My main areas of focus are US religious history, East and South Asian religions, social theories, and the relationships between religion and race, gender, and culture. I am happy to provide any further qualifications you require, including my CV and/or a copy of my diploma.

Writing

I currently teach writing and technical communication at the University of Florida and have over 10 years' experience as a writing tutor for K-12, college, and adult education.
