About me: I spent 10 years working for the Caltech/NASA Jet Propulsion Lab on advanced optical systems. This work included camera alignment for the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. For the last 11 years I have worked independently and started three technology companies. I live in Gainesville, FL with my girlfriend.

Physics:

My first technical job involved calibration of an X-ray astronomy satellite. Since then I have worked on instrumentation and analysis for a number of astronomical and earth-observing science systems. There is a lot of applied physics in this work. I think I have a talent for visualizing physical concepts, and I incorporate this into my tutoring. Visualizations help with understanding and development.

Math:

Math has always been a strong point. I enjoy the abstractions inherent in math at all levels.

Programming:

I know approximately 10 languages. I emphasize Matlab in my profile since I use it almost daily for analysis and graphing. I have used Matlab extensively since 2000.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies.

MATLAB

MATLAB

Matlab is widely used in academic research, engineering, and elsewhere. I love the language because it is so carefully designed, written and documented, so effective for high level scripting, and so adept at generating attractive figures. I have been using Matlab extensively since 2000, and currently I use it almost daily. I recently started two companies to license Matlab software I have written. I have taken classes in a number of programming languages, but Matlab is my favorite.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 covers a lot of topics, such as equations, inequalities, functions, graphing, polynomials, factoring, and rational expressions. Many of these are interconnected with each other. There are a huge number of practical applications, and learning about them can help make the material fun. Let's work together to empower you in this class!!
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I enjoy tutoring Algebra 2 (aka precalculus, but minus trig in some curricula) because the subject is so empowering. Algebra 2 completes the formal study of the elementary functions - polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, radical, piece-wise, and trigonometric. Parametric equations, vectors, and infinite sequences and series are also studied. Working together we can help you attain the confidence you need to succeed!!
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus includes the formal study of limits, derivatives, and integrals (and sequences and series in the case of AP Calculus BC). With my background in physics I especially enjoy the study of calculus because of the deep connection between the two. And of course there are many practical, real-world applications. Calculus is challenging, for sure. But whether you are studying for AP Calculus AB or BC, or another version of the course, let's work together to help you conquer the subject and (hopefully) have fun at the same time!!
Physics,

Physics

Physics can be overwhelming, but I am here to help. Physics is a big step into a new way of thinking. I try to show the big picture of how the concepts fit together and explain context. Physics is the most basic of all the sciences. Chemistry, biology, astronomy, etc. all have physics at their core. Kinematics, energy, momentum, rotation, waves, and electromagnetism are examples of key concepts. I try to make them interesting and fun! I am currently tutoring "AP Physics 1," "AP Physics C: Mechanics," and "AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism."
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I enjoy tutoring precalculus because the subject is so empowering. Precalculus completes the formal study of the elementary functions - polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, radical, piece-wise, and trigonometric. Parametric equations, vectors, and infinite sequences and series are also studied. Working together we can help you attain the confidence you need to succeed!!
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I show students how to follow a standard approach that employs materials provided by the makers of the SAT themselves (the College Board). In particular this means paying attention to the 10 practice tests created by the College Board, and the SAT-prep tools Khan Academy created in its partnership with the College Board. I work both with students aiming for a perfect score and students who are struggling.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I show students how to follow a standard approach that employs materials provided by the makers of the ACT themselves. In particular this means I recommend that the student purchase the "Official ACT Prep Pack," which is available on the ACT website, and includes both a paperback book and access to "ACT Online Prep." (I try to stay away from prep materials provided by 3rd party prep-book factories [Princeton Review, Kaplan, Barron's, etc.], but if a student prefers we use one of these, I am happy to do so.) I work both with students aiming for a perfect score and students who are struggling.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

Trigonometry involves trigonometric functions and graphs, inverse trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, and angle formulas. The subject has millions of real life applications in lots of different fields including physics, engineering, geography, business, and more. Trig questions appear frequently on standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. The subject can be difficult, and includes lots of functions with obscure sounding names. By the end you will understand what is so funny about the Onion headline "Nation’s Math Teachers Introduce 27 New Trig Functions." But working together hopefully we can make the subject tractable, fun, and empowering.

Great at explaining

Len helped my son prep for his honors precalculus unit test. He broke down the problem to manageable pieces and my son felt very confident after the session. Highly recommend.

A Huge Help With My College Physics Course

I have not taken a Physics class in over 10 years. As an older student in a Post-Bacc program, some concepts take longer to grasp now than when they did when I was in college. I review all lecture and homework problems with Leonard. Unlike other tutors, he takes the time to write down all the steps in solving the problems and explains them. At the end of each session, I have a neat stack of his notes as well as mine, and these have been critical study guide tools to look back on!

Excellent ACT math tutor

Leonard reviewed all the ACT math problems that my son got wrong on his prior practice tests. He explained everything very thoroughly and in an easy to understand way. My son was very happy with the session and wants to schedule another review session. Thank you!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Leonard was very patient and thorough when working with our son on calculus. He was very responsive on email as well. We will definitely use him in the future.

Tremendous Help

Len has been a tremendous help in providing a clear understanding of my son's college calculus summer class. Since the coursework is condensed, Len's tutoring has been essential in understanding the materiel. Highly recommended.

Knowledgeable

My daughter informed me that Mr. Leonard's method of teaching has allowed her to understand the topics she was not able to comprehend when taught by her college professor.

Cynthia, 7 lessons with Leonard

Really helpful and versatile tutor

Leonard has worked with both my 6th grader and 9th grader, on everything from algebra 1 to AP calc to AP physics. The kids both like him very much and he's been really helpful and patient in tamping down some of the math anxiety.

Stephanie, 67 lessons with Leonard

Really patient and knowledgeable on the subject

Len explained statistics in a visual way so I not only understand the formulas but the underlying foundation. His explanation allowed me to see statistics in a new light and actually enjoy it. He is also very patient and kind. Definitely going back to Len. Thank you so much!

Agnes, 2 lessons with Leonard

outstanding teacher

Despite meeting with many matlab tutors, Leonard is by far the best matlab tutor I have ever meet with. He is great at providing examples and makes the material very easy to understand.10/10 would recommend.

Fahad, 1 lesson with Leonard

Very knowledgeable and patient

My son likes him for AP physics tutoring, very patient and of great help. Leon is flexible in his schedule which helps a lot for adhoc request as well. Prepared and knowledgeable tutor for kids.
