About Sierra

A voracious reader, an avid writer, and an honors student at the University of Florida, I am two years into completing my undergraduate degree in English. I have always had a knack for the written word, and I am eager to impart as much of my literary knowledge to you as possible in order to ensure your success in the classroom. I have one year of tutoring experience with undergraduate and graduate students, primarily with grammar and proofreading in essay writing. Nevertheless, I am available to assist with any subject material pertaining to English, at any grade level. My assistance ranges from test preparation to reading enhancement to spelling practice to vocabulary learning, and most anything else under the English sun. If you have any questions about whether or not I'll cover your specialized subject material, feel free to ask!

Before beginning sessions, I set goals with each of my students to establish what needs to be accomplished in their desired time frame. From there, my approach varies but typically consists of one-on-one engagement to further their understanding of the topic. Thoroughly examining concepts, reviewing with practice questions, and asking students to briefly switch places with me (I momentarily become the student, as they must articulately and correctly explain the concept to me) are my main methods, but as each student and session is circumstantial, these approaches are not set in stone or unaccommodating. As aforementioned, I am also available to assist with essay writing and proofreading. I sit with students to discuss the format, syntax, and style of their paper, offering my suggestions and, if at first they are unable to see my reasoning behind the revisions, evincing my rationale for making said changes. Ultimately, I ensure they understand what changes were made (and why!) in hopes of preparing them to do the same on their own in the future. However, perhaps the most important note to make about my tutoring style is my pliability with each student's individual learning style. I immediately begin noting how I can adapt my method with you to allow for optimum success, and I try to mold our sessions accordingly. However, I am always, always, always open to feedback, and if you ever find my method to be ineffective, I implore you to let me know! (Though I do ask that you properly support your argument :) )

I graduated Summa Cum Laude in my high school class. Throughout high school, I received numerous accolades in my English classes (highest possible scores on AP exams, above average SAT scores, student of the year in my AP English classes, etc.). I have also been entering (and, as of late, winning) essay contests for many years now. While still in high school, I helped graduate and undergraduate students receive stellar grades on their papers through one-on-one tutoring. Now, as a current undergraduate student myself, I am eager to continue assisting students at all grade levels in their academic endeavors.

At the end of the day, I am looking to help you succeed with your classwork, but to also ensure you walk away from our sessions with a holistic understanding of your subject for real-world application. Let's not over complicate this--contact me if you want to excel!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
