Santa Fe College (Environmental Sci)
A student at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL, I am a kid-friendly person willing to work with all kinds of people. I attended Hidden Oak Elementary School in Gainesville, so I am familiar with the teaching style used there. During high school, I was a straight-A student, earning a 5.6 weighted GPA upon graduation. In my senior year, I worked as a student counselor for elementary and middle school children for after-school tutoring and activities. It was a great job that gave me the opportunity to understand the minds of children and help them out with work that they just don't quite understand. I work as a babysitter in Tampa, Florida, very often, and it gives me opportunities to strengthen my knowledge of how the child's mind operates.
After receiving my bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the University of Florida, I plan to work on getting a master's in Education so that I may pursue a job teaching Environmental Science to high school students. Environmental Science is my passion, history is my hobby, and working with students is my duty. It is my goal to make as much change in the world as possible and this seems to be the way to do so! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While working as an after-school tutor, many times in activities I planned ways to help children develop handwriting and script skills. I feel that repetition is one of the best ways to master this. After helping a child understand the correct way to write a letter, repetition of what they know can plant that image in their minds so that when they must write full words they can remember what was learned beforehand.
Study skills with younger students can be tricky, however working as an after-school counselor granted me with experience in understanding how little minds work. It seems that the best way to teach study skills is to set up organization methods. Organization is what got me to where I am at today, and continues to help me move forward. I believe that reorganizing and evaluating what must be learned will help students move forward in learning how to study.
