I pride myself on providing students with a complete and thorough education experience. I try hard to explain complex processes and problems in ways that allow students a fuller understanding of the material. My ultimate goal is to have students leave the class with a better understanding of the subject. I am most concerned with having students understand the material than just producing correct answers. During each tutoring session I will provide students with questions that challenge their understanding of the subject. Although we will work with specific questions, I will provide tips and comments to aide in the discussion of the problem and help students work their way through it on their own.

I feel that in order to fully understand the subject material, students benefit from knowing how to study. Through all of my years of teaching and tutoring, I have found that most students lack the basic skill of studying. During each session I work with my students to improve their study habitats. Being trained as a Biologist and Mathematician, I can fully understand the need to have good study habitats.

To describe my background, I graduated from Colorado State University in 2005 with a B.S. in Fishery Biology and Mathematics. After working in the field for a few years and applying my knowledge to relevant jobs, I was accepted into the Zoology program at the University of Florida (UF) to pursue a Master of Science degree. Although I had extensive experience tutoring and leading educational tours, acceptance into the Master's program at UF marked my first official teaching Job. Over the course of my Master's I gained experience teaching college level courses in Biology I and II, Vertebrate Biodiversity, Inquiry Based Biology, Marine Biology, and Disturbance Ecology. While at UF I tutored students in Mathematics and Biology. I finished my Master's Degree in 2013 and have since worked for a consulting company here in Gainesville.

Wide breadth of knowledge

I use QGIS for work but am mostly self-taught. Joel was able to fill in a lot of gaps in my knowledge and was even able to shed some light on GIS-adjacent software that I encounter sometimes. His explanations were all very clear and thorough, and I got a lot of value out of our session. I will definitely be booking more!

Joel helped me with a couple of assignments. The first was quick and relatively straightforward and the second was very challenging. We collaborated well and made many advancements in the Python program I was working on. I think we are close to a solution and will get it wrapped up soon.
