About Camille

Greetings-

I am an experienced private tutor and instructor in all the humanities, also specializing in college prep exams. I also work as a professional tutor with the county. I have worked with many high school and college-aged students, but I work with younger students as well. I also specialize in working with people who have anxiety, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, autistic spectrum, or other learning and emotional challenges.

I have a master's degree (4.0 GPA), and in graduate school I worked as a mentor and graduate assistant on full scholarship. I also have a Bachelor of Arts in religion and psychology. I have worked as a professional writer, assisting students in completing difficult paper assignments, and have also helped students improve their scores on the ACT and SAT. I have tutored in English, art and film history, American history, AP government, biology, philosophy, A&P, statistics, algebra, psychology, physical science, public speaking, ACT, SAT, Toefl, and GRE Verbal/writing prep (my score: 164/170), and many other subjects.

I am flexible in my hours and I am willing to come to your house if I can reach you by bus, rail, or bike, or meet at a library or coffeehouse.

I passed a background test when I was first employed by the school board. (In other words, no criminal record.)

I believe that building confidence in my students is one of the most important things I do as a tutor. I show students how to approach subjects, studying, and test prep, give them strategies for doing well, and then help them see that they can do well without me. I am patient, and I explain why writing a certain way is better, why brainstorming is important, etc. I do not talk down to students. Instead, I lift them up. I aspire to show the people I help that education is a lifelong adventure, and that learning new subjects is always worthwhile. I feel lucky to be able to learn so many subjects along side of my students, and I know my passion is catchy!

I have many recommendations from others--below is one from a student I worked with during his junior and senior years of high school:

Dear Camille,

Thank you Camille for all your hard work and dedication in tutoring our son during the past few months. We so much appreciate that you helped our son do the best he could on his SAT/ACT tests and English course. Thanks to you, Mario got a 95 on his English paper and went from a score of 17 to a score of 22 on the ACT the first time and the second time from a 22 to a 33!! We are fully aware that your persistence and interest in our son made that score possible.

Thank you for not never giving up on our son, although we know there were days that he was not the most motivated student a teacher would like to have. That you interacted with Mario in a positive, productive and upbeat way and you hold him responsible for payment if he did not show up or cancelled the tutoring session without a good excuse, helped Mario commit to meet with you every time.

That you never let Mario waste time during a session and that you were researching ways to help Mario while he was working on his own, says a lot about your working ethics and most importantly how much you care about your students improving. Our son was truly impressed with your editing skills and how resourceful you are. He says you always found a book, link or trick to help him learn a weak subject better. This remarkable quality fostered an atmosphere of trust and productivity and made Mario a better editor too! Through your interpersonal skills, support, example, genuine good will and superb ability to carry out the tutoring sessions, you enabled Mario to perform at higher levels.

Working with you was a real pleasure. You always made yourself available when we needed you the most and worked around our schedule to the best of your abilities. I will strongly recommend you to my friends or anybody that would like to have references. You will definitively receive my highest and most positive recommendation.

May God bless you with health, love and happiness always,

Alicia

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor of arts in religious studies and psychology, and a master of science in conflict resolution.

I worked as a college mentor and graduate teaching assistant for four terms during my graduate education. In this capacity, I developed curriculum and lesson plans for weekly sessions I taught to undergraduate students.

I am a currently a professional tutor through the Alachua County School Board, working with elementary students to help raise achievement in standardized testing. I am also a private tutor working with students of all ages.

My subject areas are numerous, and include the following:

Reading, Writing, English, AP courses, ACT and SAT prep, organization/study skills/test taking skills, biology, government/history, music, gifted and special needs.

Guitar

I am a Guitarist with 23 years of experience.
I teach chords and chord progressions; scales leading to lead guitar; theory.
Learning songs you want to play!

Reading

I have assisted several students of varying ages in reading. I tutor for ACTs and SATs, and also tutor for reading and English. I am a professional writer, assisting students of all ages in completing difficult assignments.

SAT Reading

Hello,

I am a tutor who has worked with several students in preparing for the Reading and Writing portions of the SAT. I have helped students greatly improve their scores. I am patient and thorough in my sessions, and believe that building the student's confidence is the best way to ensure their success. Studies have shown that when students are taught just before a test that their ethnic group or gender always scores lower on those tests, they do poorer as a result of a perceived bias. I believe the opposite is also true. When given positive praise, my students learn to trust their instincts based on hours of training with me, and greatly improve their scores.

Songwriting

I am a professional songwriter of 23 years. I have published two albums and many single tracks.

I teach songwriting workshops to people of all ages, and have facilitated music therapy groups with special needs children and adults with chronic and persistent mental illness.

Study Skills

I have worked with numerous students as a private tutor specifically in improving study skills. I have done this through developing a study schedule to reach the student's goals, and helping the student stick to the schedule. I have also taught short-hand note-taking, test-taking skills, and stress management for students who struggle with test anxiety. As my background is in mental health, I am sensitive to issues in the student's life that may impact their focus and resilience, and I develop strategies that work best with those concerns.
