About David

Hello! Thanks for checking out my tutor profile. If you're looking for a qualified math tutor, you've found a great one here. I have over 15 years of experience teaching math at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Courses range from algebra to advanced calculus. I'm very patient, explain topics in multiple ways, and spend as much time as possible making sure that you understand tough topics. I guarantee you'll learn plenty when working with me.

I am currently a PhD student in Statistics at the University of Florida and hold a Master's degree in Mathematics from The Ohio State University with a focus in Mathematics education. I have served a teaching assistant in college level mathematics, statistics, and electrical engineering courses at Georgia Tech, Ohio State, and UF. I have over 15 years experience tutoring calculus, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, algebra, statistics, discrete mathematics, college level mathematics, SAT math, ACT math, and GRE math, and actuarial science. I also have experience with Microsoft Excel, SQL, and R. I am currently in the process of developing an online mathematics course.

I previously worked as an actuary for 4 years, which involved much work with Microsoft Excel, VBA, Powerpoint and Microsoft Word. As a software developer position at Ohio State I analyzed large data sets in SQL and R.

Please contact me if you are interested in setting up a lesson. I will reply within 24 hours of your message.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I'm currently a tutor for ACT math. I've assisted students with this material for the past 10 years. I've written practice questions for an ACT math study manual. I've also taught a summer SAT math prep course.

Actuarial Science

I previously worked as an actuary in San Francisco. I've passed the following actuarial exams:

Exam P - Probability
Exam FM - Financial Mathematics
Exam MFE - Financial Economics
Exam MLC - Life Contingencies
Exam C - Evaluation of Actuarial Models

Algebra 1

I have much experience tutoring algebra. I've taught both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to high school students. I was also a teaching assistant at Ohio State for a College Algebra course. As a master's student at Ohio State I took a linear algebra course, which adds to my background in algebra.

Algebra 2

I have much experience tutoring algebra. I've taught both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to high school students. I was also a teaching assistant at Ohio State for a College Algebra course. As a master's student at Ohio State I took a linear algebra course, which adds to my background in algebra.

Calculus

I'm was previously a teaching assistant for calculus 1 at Ohio State during my time as a graduate student. I was a teaching assistant for calculus 2 at Georgia Tech for two semesters. I've tutored calculus for over 10 years.

Discrete Math

I've taken a formal courses in the mathematics and statistics department at Georgia Tech, Ohio State, and UF in combinatorics and number theory. As a teaching assistant in the math department, I taught a course in finite math, which utilized many techniques of discrete math. I also write tests for high school math competitions, which have ranged topics in discrete mathematics such as number theory.

General Computer

I've been an active computer user on a Windows operating system for the past 20 year. I have experience setting up an operating system, running system diagnostics, and much more. I have also used Mac computers and Linux as well.

Geometry

I've tutored geometry to middle school and high school students. As a master's student I took rigorous graduate level mathematics courses that required me to write proofs, which are a major component of geometry. I've also taken a differential geometry course at Ohio State, which adds to my background in geometry.

Linear Algebra

I have taken graduate level linear algebra courses and was a teaching assistant for an undergraduate linear algebra course. I am qualified to teach the following:
1) systems of linear equations
2) matrix algebra (determinants, multiplication)
3) Gaussian elimination
4) eigenvalues and eigenvectors
5) Gram-Schmidt process
6) LU decomposition

Microsoft Excel

I've used Microsoft Excel's advanced tools for the past 10 years. I'm experienced creating pivot tables, data tables, lookup formulas (vlookups, hlookups), and mathematical and statistical formulas (countif, sumif, sumproduct, etc.). I'm able to make sense of large data sets through Excel's advanced functionalities.

Prealgebra

I've tutored numerous students in algebra and pre-algebra. I will walk students through an algebra problem in a step-by-step fashion, allowing them to formulate their own process for solving an algebra problem. I make things as simple and clear as possible during our lesson.

Precalculus

I've tutored numerous high school and college students in precalculus. I taught courses in precalculus as Ohio State and Georgia Tech. As a tutor I make sure that students understand both the algebra and geometry components of the course, as well as making sure they are prepared for calculus if they decide to continue with mathematics.

Probability

I'm currently a PhD student in Statistics at the University of Florida. My research focus has foundations in probability and statistics. I've taught courses involving probability topics at the high school and college levels.

R

I am an advanced user of the R programming language with over 5 years of experience. I've used the language for data processing and statistical analysis. I'm currently using R to build multivariate logistic models and develop machine learning algorithms to analyze medical data.

SAT Math

I'm currently a tutor for SAT math. I've assisted students with this material for many years. I've written practice questions for an ACT math study manual. I've also taught a summer SAT math prep course.

Statistics

I am currently a PhD student in Statistics and have taken formal graduate courses in probability and statistics. I am a statistics instructor at the University of Florida. I've tutored college and high school level statistics for over 10 years.
