About Dr. Tonya

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to stop by.

My experiences have led to me becoming an effective, passionate tutor specializing in reading comprehension and college entrance exams preparation.

As a university educator for more than 10 years I have seen first-hand what not being fully literate in reading can do to an individual. I have seen many students start and drop out of college due to their inability to read and comprehend the lessons. As a literacy director for a nonprofit organization I have seen first-hand how the inability to read and comprehend hampers and hinders otherwise intelligent, bright, insightful individuals from reaching their dreams. My heart bleeds for anyone young or old that cannot read comprehensively, and so I aim to give back and help as much as I can.

I am an Adjunct Professor and I work with several universities, both face to face and online, where I teach marketing, management and leadership courses. I am a literacy director and summer reading program director of a nonprofit organization, where we assist people from all walks of life, young and old reach their literacy goals.I am also a career counselor and coach with more than 10 years of experience in counseling, mentoring and coaching others in developing and reaching their career goals. Just recently I became a published author. I am a writer and inspirational speaker. I share my prolific resume and experience because I try to make it a point of capitalizing on all of my experiences and strengths to provide holistic educational sessions.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, graduated with honors, summa cum laude. A Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in management, graduated with a 3.9 GPA, and a Doctorate of Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing, graduated with a 4.0 GPA. My passion is education! And I am so glad it found me. I have spent many years in Corporate America, managing and directing in administrative capacities, now I have the opportunity to help others in a real meaningful way. Watching others grow in their reading abilities and seeing the confidence arise out of seemingly nowhere is one of my greatest pleasures. Finally, I use a variety of methods as I tutor. I realize that every individual is different . I try to reach individuals through their passions, so I will spend some time getting to know the individual and what drives them to succeed. Once I've tapped into your passion there is no where to go but up.

I like to consider myself compassionate yet challenging, knowledgeable yet willing to learn from everyone I meet. If you are looking for someone who is going to be effective in helping you or your child reach their goals, contact me. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to reach your goals in any way that I can.

I have an office location in Frostproof and prefer to tutor from that office. I am also available to tutor online with Wyzant. Please contact me for other travel arrangements if need be.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I am qualified to tutor in ACT Reading because I am a nationally certified tutor with many years of experience with teaching students reading strategies in both my tutoring center and as the Director of a Literacy Program for a local non profit.

In my ACT reading sessions we focus on developing and enhancing critical thinking, comprehension and inferred understanding skills. These skills will be used in college and throughout life; therefore Improving in these skills are extremely important.

Along with critical thinking lessons and vocabulary lessons I use to ACT sample tests to study and practice with students. I have found actually using ACT sample tests helps students become more familiar with ACT passages and decreases anxiety when taking the real test.

American History

I am a history buff. I enjoy being able to make history interesting to the millennial generation. I love helping students understand that not knowing where you've been makes it difficult to see where you are going.

Part of my objective is to help students learn from an everyday practical perspective. If they can relate the lesson, the reading to something they are familiar with it sticks. I enjoy helping them make that journey.

GED

I am the director of a literacy program for a local non profit. I have worked with many adult students in working towards their goal of getting their GED.

Having patience and understanding the learning styles of each students is one of the most important elements in helping GED candidates reach their goal.

Grammar

Not all students are the same; however, understanding basic grammar rules is the foundation to comprehensive reading. I have found that it is helpful to take some students back to basic grammar in order to help them read with comprehension.

I enjoy seeing their eyes light up when understanding comes. I use a variety of resources and tools to help students learn grammar. It boils down to the type of learner they are that will decide the tools and resources to use.

Microsoft Word

I am your Microsoft Word Guru. If there something I don’t know I can figure it out. However, I try to stay on top of all of the latest updates. I have written many papers using Microsoft Word. I have pretty much mastered all of its elements or at the very least have used them.

I have used Microsoft Word for writing papers, books, reports, event programs, dissertations, promotional flyers, meme’s, advertisements, etc. You name it. I’ve done It. Need help in figuring out Microsoft Word, call me. We will get it figured out.

Public Speaking

As a lifelong student and professor I have taken and given classes on the art of persuading in speeches and communication including but not limited to: effective body language, the ability to engage the audience, the ability to listen effectively, possessing good stage presence and the art of presenting strong arguments.

Through all of my educational endeavors I have had to present many presentations on various topics and subjects, including presentations for my final MBA project and Dissertation for my doctorate.

As an author and inspirational speaker I present many topics to a variety of audiences and diverse backgrounds and cultures.
As a career counselor I teach skills on the art of effective communication in one on one interviewing, panel interviews, public presentations, etc.

Reading

Reading is fundamental. This is something we all have heard. While this statement is true very rarely will you find me using this cliché. I have learned through my many years of working in Corporate America and as an educator that the following saying is true. People don’t care about what you know until they know that you care.

We all have dreams and goals that we care about. I try to make sure that I understand those dreams and goals before embarking upon any reading session. Being able to help students relate their passion to the subject matter that needs to be mastered is most often the difference between mediocre work and excellent, setting the bar work.

Students are provided with various tools to help them achieve their reading goals. I have found the most important part of the sessions is getting to the root of the problem and then offering solutions. In our initial stages I will also select and choose reading topics that interest the student. Combining both reading for pleasure and reading for purpose helps to build the enjoyment of reading.

Finally, encouragement works almost every time. When people know you believe in them and that you have high expectations of them they will meet you right where you expect them to be.

SAT Reading

SAT Reading

The SAT much like the ACT can be very unforgiving and quite disheartening. There is little to no error making room. Many students have trouble with the SAT because they are not so sure what to expect and how to prepare.

Some of the main differences between the ACT and SAT is that the SAT requires more critical thinking skills and the ability to make inferences from what they’re reading. Wherein the ACT is more straightforward the SAT is a bit more abstract in its problem solving.

In my SAT reading sessions we focus on developing and enhancing critical thinking, comprehension and inferred understanding skills. Students will find that these are necessary skills to have in life in general.

Study Skills

In my role as a lifelong student, professor and career counselor I have accumulated, practiced and taught study skills and to how become adept at studying. I became proficient in study skills as I progressed in my educational pursuits. My abilities are demonstrated in my grade point average for each degree. With my bachelor’s degree I graduated with honors, summa cum laude, 3.9 GPA. With my MBA I graduate with a 3.9 GPA as well and with my Doctorate I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Grade Point averages were achieved as an adult learner with many responsibilities including being a parent, full time positions as direct or my department and other extracurricular activities.

I help students to understand that there is no one way to study. It is imperative to understand your way of learning which impacts your way of studying.

I help students figure out how they learn so that we can then ascertain how they should study and what works for them. Among other tools I use various questionnaires to help students understand how they learn.

Vocabulary

Many times we find that reading comprehension and verbal expression are impeded by insufficient vocabulary.

Some reading sessions will include vocabulary words. Understanding definitions, writing sentences, expressing them in verbal communication, etc.

I like to see my students at a grade or two above their grade level in vocabulary.
