About Ngoih

My name is Ngoih (Noi) and I am a recent graduate with a B.A in English. Most of my works required reading and analyzing classical works in literature ranging from Beowulf, Shakespeare, to modern poets and writers like Alice Walker. I've done extensive research projects in university writing, editing, and formatting for academic journal publishing. During my last year as an undergraduate, I chanced upon a teaching internship encouraged by my own college adviser as a Teaching Assistant to his English Composition I class. I made thorough lesson plans for my lecture in the class by highlighting the main focus of the specific topic with examples. Since visual diagrams always help out students, I used this to my advantage when I tried to explained the need for coherency for a well-written paper to show how one reasoning is dependent on another. My teacher and I further the class by having the students participate in writing workshops to help them get through their agony of not having enough ideas or thoughts. This was our chance to work one on one with students and give individual and different positive feedback to the progressions and difficulties. To manage their process outside of class, we had the students post their writing on the school archive made for specific classes every semester, and using this page, my professor and I commented on the writings regularly and some students quickly fixed their mistakes and posted up a new draft immediately on that day. During this internship, I also privately tutored a Korean student who came to the States with a sole purpose to learn English. Since he was in a University with some level of English reading, writing, and speaking skills, to better his English, he and I developed goals for each month to work toward for specific improvements. To identify I spent a week with him to thoroughly understand his reading, writing, and speaking skills by having him read a book, writing everyday and spent time in public setting creating conversations. After analyzing, I discussed with him as best as possible on what I found and we worked together on how to create our own schedule and lessons for him to excel. Both of these experiences were rewarding because I learned to deal with a class room setting and an individual setting, but none differs in the need to understand an individual student because everyone counts. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken up to university level Calculus I,II, and III with all A in every semester. I love math; and being an English major has not stopped my interest or authentic appreciation for it, as I would love to tutor this subject. I have helped out my younger siblings and friends who've had difficulties with college algebra, pre-cal, and trigonometry for the past seven years.

Algebra 2

I have taken up to university level Calculus I,II, and III with all A in every semester. I love math, and I've helped tutor young siblings and friends in Algebra II in the past.

Elementary Math

I have taught from basic algebra to university level calculus within a classroom setting during my school years at my university and in a private setting with clients from WyzAnt. Even as an English major, I have completed calculus I, II, and III to better my knowledge in mathematics because of a genuine interest. I have helped middle school students after school and co-taught with teachers for community service hours. I am very experienced in this field of study and confident that I can do a good job.

English

As a teacher, I co-taught with my English professor for a year and many of my lesson lectures were always followed by writing workshops for the remainder of each of the classes. During the writing workshop, as a co-teacher, I walked around the class to make sure students were on task and answered questions one-on-one for: students who had troubled beginning the writing process, getting stuck in the middle of the writing process, students who had their writings on paper but does seems to makes sense to them, and/or students who needed/wanted their writings to be looked-over. When I assess their writings, I gave them positive feedback with corrections on grammar, spelling, style, diction, form, and composition.

ESL/ESOL

As an ESOL student myself long ago, I understand the grammatical challenges, pronunciation challenges, and comprehension challenges when it comes to learning English. I have privately tutored a Korean university student for half a year. First, I took time in getting to know him and his level of English through sessions on speaking, reading, and writing to identify his flaws, which I shared with him when I finished my analysis in the best of my ability to communicate in simple English. We made our own schedule on goals to accomplished each month and I compose the specific materials to be use during the lessons with the student's permission with much success at the end of his tutoring sessions.

Microsoft Excel

AS an IT Assistant in my University for three and a half years, I had to self educate myself to work with Excel because of business students having to use them and most of the students needs answers on how to input complicated arithmetic equations. I had many occasions where I helped students and teachers with simple and general use of excel such as how to print with grid lines and how to add columns and rows of cells. For advanced students, I had helped them how to insert pie charts and graphs to show statistics based on their completed data on the excel spreadsheet. I also helped out with complex problems such as adding two different cells in two different spreadsheet and also dealt with different computations such as percentages as well.

Precalculus

I have taken up to university level Calculus I, II, and III with an A every semester. I love math, and I've helped tutor young siblings and friends in Algebra II in the past. Math is a passionate subject of mine even though my undergraduate major was in English.

SAT Reading

I have a teaching experience that involved analysis and synthesis and required close and careful reading in a University classroom. Under the leadership of my English professor, I have learned to teach students how to read effectively by not rushing through, and then moving on to how they can increase their pace of reading. And yes, it did take time; but by the end of the semester, there was great improvement for those students who followed my instruction.

SAT Writing

Spelling

As a recent graduate with a B.A in English, I sympathize with literary activists passion with being able to not only understand words but to spell them since they are significant to the ways in which we sound them out. During my experience as a co-teacher with my English professor, while grading students papers, seeing spelling errors on a paper posed the question of whether or not the student is literate enough to write a coherent story or understand a story thorough when every glance is marked by words spelled out and not sound. To help solve this problem, I searched for essays, short stories, excerpts from journals or novels, that challenged the class in understanding the story through understanding the words. And to practice, I assigned personal reflection writings that followed after a class discussion asking the students to use the words or phrase the author chose to use in the particular text.

Writing

As a English university graduate, I have experiences in academic research and in writing a well verse paper on a specific topic. I co-taught English composition I and II in my university with one of my English professors and this gave me a keen insight to clarifying students' problems in their grammar, writing style, and critical reasoning. Being a co-teacher also taught me how to better handle, on a one-on-one level as well as in a classroom level, giving helpful critiques to each individual students and to the whole class. I have been a great helping tool for my professor as well as a reliable teaching assistant for the English Comp I and II students and I am confident that I be helpful to you as well.
