About Brock

I’ll start with a little bit about myself. My nursing career started at Nova Southeastern University. During my time in nursing school I developed a method of studying and learning aspects of nursing care that I was able to succeed well on tests. After my second semester I was offered a position as a tutor for the up coming classes behind me.

I tutored all different types of classes, but mostly I taught pathophysiology, adult I, adult II and pharmacology. Every week my session size seemed to grow and before I knew it I was tutoring almost an entire class and doing more one on one sessions. I tutored for a totally of 2½ years until I graduated in December 2015.

Next, I will tell you a little about my credentials that I believe help me explain information to students in an effective way. I started my medical career working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). After about a year I attended emergency medical technician (EMT) school. After EMT school I started working in the emergency room as an emergency tech and EKG monitor technician. Currently I work as a registered nurse in an emergency room. I believe my experience as a tutor for two years in nursing material and hands on experience brings a special aspect to my teaching approach.

Lastly, I will explain the type of teaching approaches use to help tutor my students. Something that my students believe helps them the most is my focus on truly understanding the information rather than memorizing it. I make sure my students are able to have a conversation about a topic rather than rattle of facts.

One of my biggest resources is a dry erase board that I use to help my student to visualize the concept of the topic we are discussing. I ask my students a lot of scenario-based questions to improve and grow critical thinking skills. An important component of nursing is the ability to critically think through particular scenarios or test questions. I also think it’s important for someone to be taught a topic then reteach it. So at the end of my session I use a few minutes to let the student teach me what they learned. This is proven to help students recall information and allows me to notice any weaknesses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
