About Sylvia

I have taught in Elementary, Middle and High School. I believe in "hands-on" learning. Learning should be fun, interesting and rewarding. Students learn when a teacher is enthusiastic about a subject and knowledgeable. I work from the student's needs and build on the subject in slow, steady increments.
I enjoy working with all kinds of students. I have worked in Gifted Education as well as Special Education.

Every child is special. Students can have learning styles and preferences. Some students like visual clues, some like auditory learning and some learn best with "hands-on" or tactile learning. Knowing how this particular student learns is an important clue to success in the tutoring process.

I am a certified Space Science for Schools teacher. Space Science is a personal interest. For four years I ran the Star Lab program at my school.

My degree is in English Literature. I am a poet and writer as well. I have taught Writing Traits in 5th grade and Creative Writing.

I worked as a instructor in a Computer Adult Training school. I taught several of the Microsoft Office products including WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT.

When students are not receiving good grades they often feel defeated. I work to overcome the "I can't" and bring it to the "I Can". Learning where the misunderstandings are and then encouraging students always brings success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored Reading/Writing for many years. I created a Test Prep/ Study Skills Class for my students last year, including ACT English. I know I can give your student the tools he needs to improve his test scores.

ACT Reading

I have proctored standardized testing. I have taught Test Preparation classes. I know many tricks to help students succeed. Test taking is a skill that can be learned. The reading portion in particular can be practiced to increase a student's score.

ACT Science

ACT Science Qualifications
I was a laboratory technician before becoming a teacher. I am also a Space Science for Schools teacher. In my Gifted Program, I emphasized the Sciences, biology, chemistry, ecology, forensics, space science and physics.

My strong Science background and my extensive TEST PREP experience make this a perfect tutoring match. Don't let the online platform scare you. I have used it before and it is convenient and effective.

I have a teaching license in Special Education and Gifted Education. I have worked with several ADD/ADHD and dyslexia students. I attended the June Shelton School in Dallas, TX for training specifically in how to teach ADD/ADHD students.
I have also taught students with Autism and Asperger's.
I know how to motivate and congratulate student success. My Montessori training has taught me to "follow the child". This enables me to use student interests to help calm and focus students with ADD/ADHD challenges. I am very aware of various learning styles. I first explore how a student responds and then customize lessons to that learning style.

In order to get my California Teaching Certification I had to study for, take and PASS the CBEST. I also took and passed the PRAXIS exam.

I was a reading tutor for a college student diagnosed with Dyslexia. I attended the June Shelton School training program in Dallas, TX. This school is specially geared to students with Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities. It is Pre-K through High School. Students from all over the world attend this very specialized learning environment. I received a certificate of completion for this training. I have worked with students with mild and severe forms of Dyslexia. These students need positive reinforcement and special adaptive means to learn to read and sometimes write. This may include auditory methods.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught in the Elementary grades most of my teaching career. As a Montessori teacher, I worked with students Ages 3-6 and 6-9. I taught in public elementary subjects 5th grade Math, 5th Grade Writing, 5th Grade and Middle School English and 4th grade Social Studies. As a Gifted Education teacher, I taught grades 2-6 in Science and Technology. As a Space Science teacher, before I retired one year ago, I taught students from Pre-K through 5th grade. In my Higher Order Thinking Skills class I taught grades 2-5. I know both the development, behavioral and learning differences of these age groups. I know how to adapt lessons to these variations. I am particularly good at teaching young students to read and understand math concepts due to my Montessori manipulative training.

Elementary Math

I trained as a Montessori Math instructor and can help struggling students by using "hands-on" manipulatives. I have taught Elementary math at several grade levels.

I have a BA in English. I am also a writer. I published a book of poetry. I taught Writing Traits. Before retiring, I set up a TEST PREPARATION class for all of the upper grades in our school. I enjoy working with students to increase their reading and writing skills.

I taught in an Alternative High School. I worked in the computer lab to assist students who were studying for their GED. I have proctored other standardized tests. I am a patient, supportive, positive reinforcement tutor.

I am a write on the board teacher. My own handwriting needs to be clear for students to understand instructions and notes. I have been told I have a good handwriting. I went to school when handwriting practice was required. I have also helped students improve their handwriting. I am familiar with special pencils and other tools to help students who need fine motor skill assistance. I also know practices to improve "hand/eye" coordination. Despite the use of computers, I am a supporter of a legible handwriting. It is a brain activity helpful to students.

My daughter used Home/Hospital tutoring for her 2nd grade. I worked with this teacher and discussed how she developed curriculum customized to each students needs and medical condition. I presented a Space Science course to a group of HomeSchool parents and students. I have several friends who Home-School their children and know how they organize their time and curriculum. I am good at assessing a student's strengths and need for improvement skills. I also use a Multiple Intelligences and Learning Style evaluation to be sure a student's needs are met. I have a background in both Language Arts and Sciences which is helpful to Home Schooling parents.

Microsoft Excel

Passed the WyzAnt EXCEL tutor qualifying test. Taught basic and advanced EXCEL in an Adult Computer Training Center.

Microsoft Outlook

I use Microsoft Outlook as my mail server. More importantly, I taught Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Outlook for an Adult Computer Training Center. I have used Microsoft Outlook for my last job for the Department of Defense Education Activity. I created groups and used many advanced features to send emails to teachers, staff and parents.

Proofreading and the Online WyzAnt platform is a perfect match. It would be like using FACETIME or SKYPE. You can scan your essay and I can give you immediate feedback. Thus consider using me as a tutor. I have taught writing and I am a writer. Hope to hear from you.

I tutored reading to adults and children for several years. I had my own tutoring service. I have training in Montessori Language acquisition as well as work in Special Education teacher reading programs.

SAT Reading

I have tutored Reading in several grade levels. My training with the Soar to Success Reading program, Monterey Reading and as a private tutor qualifies me to tutor and teach Reading to early grades up to Adult learners. I am patient and supportive. I know many standardized tests tips and tricks to help students increase their fluency and comprehension. I know how to keep students focused on the questions the test is looking for rather than just reading for pleasure. It takes practice. I have used these methods myself to work through difficult texts. Students I have tutored have benefited from the training I give them. I designed and taught a Test Prep class for 3rd-5th grades (215 students) taking the TCAP in Tennessee. I also Proctored and Assisted in giving these tests. This experience helps me to understand student test anxiety and ways to support them through this process.

Special Needs

My license in Nevada includes K-8 Special Education. My Master's Equivalency for Washoe County School District was in Special Education with additional certification in Gifted. I worked as a Special Education Coordinator/Teacher for a Montessori Charter School in Reno, NV. I was a long term sub (three months) in a self-contained High School class. I subbed in an Alternative High School. I have taught in an inclusion setting and in a Resource setting. I have written and coordinated IEP's. I have worked with Special Needs students with Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, Asperger's and Autism Spectrum. I have tutored Special Needs students in Reading and Math.

Study Skills

For the last several years, I offered pre-standardized tests study/practice classes for grades 3-5. I taught the entire school at Barsanti Elementary (550-600) students a class called HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills). I wrote the curriculum to teach "how to learn" not "what to learn" Basically, it was a Study Skills class. Students learned how to memorize, how to skim reading material and how to take notes. I also talk how to create mnemonic devices. All students at all levels of learning and with all learning styles benefited from these study techniques and habits.

I taught 5th grade Writing Traits. I am a writer and editor as well. I have taught many different reading programs. I also had my own Reading Tutoring business for a number of years. I worked successfully with children and adults.
