About JARED

I have a degree in English from Florida State University. I scored 720/800 on the SAT Verbal and 740/800 on the SAT Writing. Also, I scored 4/5 on the AP Literature exam and 169/170 on the GRE Verbal (placing me in the 99th percentile). Pearson published one of my instructional essays in 2015. Most importantly, I listen to my clients and make sure I am always meeting their needs.

I have always thrived in English class, from grade school through college. I have a rare talent for reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and spelling; I have devoted my life so far to improving these strengths. In addition, I am an excellent test-taker, as evidenced by a history of scoring in the top percentiles.

I love sharing my knowledge and adapting my tutoring style to make the most of each student's unique strengths, interests, and learning style. I have over two years of tutoring experience with college students, both in a major university's writing center and in the library of a small vocational college.

I believe that 90% of succeeding in academics is a strong desire to learn. I know how to nurture that desire, even for students with negative associations about school and learning. Reading and writing are important skills needed for a successful life - so don't wait. Contact me today!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have performed well on every standardized English test I have taken (see other subjects). I know the material required for the ACT English, and I know the test-taking strategies that guarantee a higher score.

ACT Reading

I have performed well on every standardized English test I have taken (see other subjects). I know the material required for the ACT Reading, and I know the test-taking strategies that guarantee a higher score.

English

I have a B.A. degree in English from Florida State University, and I have over 2 years of experience tutoring all types of English skills (writing, reading, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, etc.). I have had many articles published as a news writer and an educational essay published in a Pearson textbook.

ESL/ESOL

I have over two years of experience teaching ESOL students. The first year, I helped foreign Master's and PhD candidates at FSU proofread their research writings. The second year, I tutored prospective nursing students, most of whom spoke Spanish or Creole as their first language and were still learning the basics of English. I have studied both Spanish and French to an Intermediate level. I can draw meaningful learning connections between two different languages.

Grammar

I have been tutoring grammar for over 2 years, both proofreading college-level papers and teaching basic sentence structure to ESOL students. I also scored 740 out of 800 on the SAT Writing. I am an expert in all areas of grammar, including syntax, diction, and punctuation.

Literature

I scored 4 of 5 on the AP Literature exam as a high school senior. I completed several Honors Literature courses at FSU with an A- average. I am familiar with a broad range of literature and several theories of analyzing it. I have written several "A" literary analysis papers, including a 17-page final paper which I intend to publish in the future.

Proofreading

I have a keen eye for finding errors, and I always know exactly how to fix them. More importantly, I am proficient in quickly finding the best way to phrase a sentence to maximize its effect. I know how to employ rhetoric to improve any written passage. I also know how to cater writing to a specific target audience.

Reading

I have always loved reading, and my reading level is well above the 12th-grade mark. I ace every reading comprehension test or quiz I take, and I love sharing the power of reading more than anything else; reading is the most empowering thing anyone can learn, because it is the gateway to self-learning.

SAT Reading

I scored 720 of 800 on the SAT Reading test and 169 of 170 on the GRE Verbal test. My reading comprehension is well above the 12th grade level.

SAT Writing

I scored 740 of 800 on the SAT Writing test and 169 of 170 on the GRE Verbal test. This places me above the 90th percentile on the SAT Writing and in the 99th percentile of all GRE test-takers. I also love to teach the test-taking skills that have helped me be so successful.

Vocabulary

My high school education ensured that I graduated with a superior vocabulary; my personal love for reading has only supplemented my already massive mental word bank. Because I have diverse interests, I have a far-reaching vocabulary, including many scientific words. I love teaching vocabulary and finding fun ways to help learners memorize new words.

Writing

I am a published writer (83 news articles and one essay). My college major was Creative Writing and I graduated with a 3.6 GPA. I am highly skilled and experienced in research, non-fiction, fiction and poetry writing. I also have experience with application, resume, cover letter, and personal statement writing.
