I have spent many years working within a school and also a mental health clinic as a social worker. During this time I provided mental health case management to kids and adults. I also spent the past year and a half working with children and adults who had a developmental, mental health, or physical disability. I had the opportunity to set up a supported employment program for adults. I created a weekly job class designed to meet the needs of the individuals I was working with. We worked on social skills and all aspects of getting hired to keeping a job after they were employed. I met with employers in the community to develop positions specific to the needs and desires of individual consumers. I provided job coaching and visits to job sites and worked with employers to identify, modify, or eliminate barriers to employment or advancement. I was successful in placing consumers in customized and traditional employment positions. I also volunteered with a program that offered Independent living skills to students ages 16-21, many with disabilities. I was the main speaker on preparing for employment. As an AmeriCorps Youth Worker, I supervised high school students in a youth run business and within a youth center. During that time I also developed a one to one tutoring program and recruited, trained, and supervised volunteers.
With a Master's in Social Work degree, I have knowledge in human development and behavior and mental, cognitive, physical, and social dysfunctions. I am sensitive to cultural differences. I have the ability to research and seek out resources as appropriate to your needs. I take a client-centered approach to working with individuals and their families. I will have conversations with you (and your parents) about your goals and your current abilities and build on your strengths. I will come to understand how you learn best so that you are as successful as you can be. I am willing to seek out employment with you whether it be a traditional employment position in your community or finding an employer who is willing to "create" a job just for you, working the hours and days that fit your needs. People I have worked with say that I am organized, compassionate about the people I work with, caring, positive, non-judgmental and have a sense of humor. I look forward to hearing from you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's of Social Work Degree. I have knowledge of human development and behavior, family dynamics, and mental, physical, and social dysfunctions. I have worked as a case manager for the past 11 years with young children through adults who had developmental, physical, and/or mental health disabilities. I was constantly assessing and evaluating the individuals needs and providing resources and referrals as needed. I wrote individual treatment plans and attended staffings including special education meetings. I worked 7.5 years in a school system providing case management to children 0-18 years old and their families.
I taught job employment skills to people with special needs as part of a Independent Living Skills program to 16-21 years olds. I also ran a supported employment program in a mental health clinic setting to adults with mental health, cognitive, and physical limitations. I provided a combination of visual, auditory, and hands-on tools to teach skills. I provided job coaching and met with employers to create jobs to fit the consumers I worked with and supported others in traditional jobs. I assisted individuals to apply to job positions on-line.
I have also taught basic computer skills. I taught the class through a community education organization to seniors with the help of high school students enrolled in a youth center.
