I am a mathematics educator who believes that math is accessible to many types of learners. I strive to bring the concept of mathematics alive through a focus on the big ideas of mathematics rather than the discrete skills. When math makes sense, math is easy.

Making sense of math, rather than computation, assists students in applying the many skills available to them in solving problems. Getting an answer is not as fun as finding multiple pathways to an answer.

Making sense of math, rather than computation, assists students in applying the many skills available to them in solving problems. Getting an answer is not as fun as finding multiple pathways to an answer.

Some pathways are more efficient than others, but it is in the exploration of the process that a deeper understanding of mathematics can be gained. I have both taught and tutored mathematics for the past 25 years. I have also coached students in swimming and volleyball. I have worked with students of many cultural backgrounds and with various levels of English.

I have an MBA in Business Administration and a Virginia State K-8 Teaching License which expires June 2019. I have taught students in Grades 6 through 11 and have tutored students from early elementary school through Grade 11.

I have a strong skill set for assisting students in making meaningful connections between fractions, decimals and percentages as well as connecting the concepts of linear equations with other functions.

I am excited to tutor Elementary Math, Prealgebra, Algebra I and Algebra II. I am a quiet, patient, interested tutor. I will not spend our time together instructing, but questioning and guiding. Students must form their own pathways within their brain and the only way for that to happen is if the student is the one thinking and talking.

I look forward to your inquiry.

Elementary Math

As I have taught HS Mathematics, I understand first hand the connections an elementary student needs to make in order to be successful in higher mathematics. I am skilled in helping elementary school students to make connections to the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I work with students to develop mental computation skills based on the action of the operations.
